Fourth Quarter Book Report

The fourth quarter book report will take on a different style than usual. You will be expected to read ONE book which has been adapted into a movie. Your movie will need to be PG-13 in nature and you will need to get parent approval before beginning. You will then be completing a literature-to-film analysis of the two. Your analysis will be two pages, typed, in MLA format. Each book needs to be at least 175 pages and on grade level.

As you read, you will be completing a reading log. This is to make sure you are actually reading the book. Every Friday, I will be checking your reading logs to make sure you are making progress. You will be responsible for tracking your pages read and getting a parent signature. The due dates and worth are as follows:

Book /film selection by March 26, 2018 – 10 points

On a notecard, you will write the title, author, genre, grade level, and page number of the book AS WELL as the film information: year released, director, and rating. Along with this, I would like a parent signature on the card which shows they acknowledge and approve of your book/film choice.

Obtain book by March 30th—10 points

You will need to your book to class on Friday, March 30th. From this point forward, you will need to have your book with you every day for silent reading opportunities. In this way, I know you are not waiting until the last minute to complete your reading/paper.

Reading Log checks April 6th, 13th, 20th, and 27th – 10 points each

This gives you four, full weeks to complete a 175 page book. This ends up being about 6-10 pages per night (and I do not expect you to read over the weekend unless you are behind)! These are easy points to get so make sure you are being responsible and completing your reading.

Book Report Paper due May 11th—50 points

  • 2 pages, typed, correct MLA format—5 points
  • Spelling & grammar—5 points
  • In what ways were the two similar? How did they differ? Was the movie a good or poor representation of the book? Be specific and include evidence from the book and film to show the comparison– 30 points
  • What would you change or do differently if you were making the film? – 10 points

If you answer all of these questions, and follow MLA format, and proofread your paper for errors, there is not any reason you should not get full points. The purpose of this is to analyze how the film adaptation of a book can differ.

Each day late is a 10% deduction from the total points possible. After May 16th, I will no longer accept late papers and you will receive a zero if it is not complete.
