FOOD SHELF ASSOCIATE

Classification:Half-time Non-exempt

Hours Per Week:20

Schedule Hours:7:00 a.m. – 11:00a.m. Mondays

8:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Tuesdays-Fridays

Accountability:Reports to Client Services Program Manager

Essential Functions:

The Food Shelf Associate’s primary function is to ensure the success of Channel One’s mission – “help feed people in need”, and to accomplish the organization’s strategic goal of “creating an exemplary program” in relation to the food shelf and its direct customers. This is done by working with individual and group volunteers – giving guidance and direction as needed, and providing excellent service to food shelf customers to ensure a satisfying shopping experience for clients of all ages and diverse ethnicities.

The Food Shelf Associateis responsible for the daily physical maintenance and stocking of the food shelf and its related warehouse, cooler and freezer areas. The Food Shelf Associate, under the direction of the Client Services Program Manager, and adhering to all Channel One policies and procedures, will ensure that all clients have access to available product in a safe, clean, friendly and non-judgmental environment.

Other than working with volunteers, this position does not supervise staff.

Primary Responsibilities:

  1. Following best practices for food shelves ensure the food shelf is adequately stocked each day, and re-stocked during the day by properly arranging items on shelves and placing containers of sorted product in food shelf and in cooler and freezers for easy and safe access to clients.
  2. Move NAPS pallets into food shelf and replenish CSFP cheese as needed during the day.
  3. Check and log cooler and freezer temperatures daily and follow all Channel One, Feeding America, and Department of Health guidelines and requirements to ensure food safety.
  4. Under the direction of the Client Services Program Manager or Warehouse Manager, identify product from warehouse and/or clean room for placement in the food shelf, maintaining first-in-first out procedures.
  5. Monitor food shelf inventory and restock items throughout the day, bringing in items from back stock as needed to ensure consistent supply of food choices to clients.
  6. Alert Client Services Program Manager and Community Engagement Coordinatorof volunteer needs in the food shelf.
  7. Adhering to Channel One policies and procedures, and under the guidance of the Program Manager, provide training and direction to food shelf store and warehouse volunteers, arranging and setting up work for individuals and groups throughout the day, and ensuring that volunteer tasks are completed correctly.
  8. Alert Client Services Program Manager of any problems, including inventory shortages or client issues.
  9. Maintain order on the floor and ensure client safety by monitoring traffic flow, removing obstacles, keeping shopping carts corralled, etc.
  10. Maintain and update all food shelf product signage and clientinstructions, ensuring all are accurate and clearly visible to clients.
  11. Provide assistance and direction to shoppers by answering questions, resolving conflict, assisting first-time shoppers and explaining food shelf rules and processes if needed, being sensitive to each individual’s situation, providing them with a positive experience with Channel One and maintaining the dignity and privacy of each client.
  12. Keep warehouse aisles free of food, boxes, clutter, debris, etc. throughout the day. Combine pallets of food as necessary to free up additional pallet space for incoming food or orders.
  13. Put away food bank orders and miscellaneous food transferred from the food bank.
  14. Conduct regular maintenance and cleaning in the food shelf, freezer and cooler, andwarehouse area as directed, including, but not limited to: emptying trash, sweeping warehouse aisle, sweeping and mopping food shelf, cleaning cooler, defrosting freezer, removing cardboard, etc.

Qualifications:

High school graduateor equivalent. Minimum 2 years’ experience in retail stocking, warehousing, and customer service required. Forklift certification or willingness to become certified highly preferred.Ability to frequently lift50 pounds, basic reading and math skills, and the ability to understand and complete written and oral instructions required. Strong interpersonal and verbal communication skills. Ability to work comfortably and positively with diverse populations. Experience working with or supervising volunteers helpful. Non-judgmental attitude required. Ability to speak bi-lingual preferred.
