“Flowers for Algernon” Permission Slip
Dear Parents,
In Grade Ten English Language Arts we will be beginning a Unit based on the novel “Flowers for Algernon”. Part of the work in our unit will be based on critical and personal analysis of the cinematic genre of story telling. We will also be comparing parts of these stories to novels that the students will read in class. The work will encompass teaching students how to view movies critically so they are better able to observe the cinematic techniques that have evolved since the beginning of motion pictures. The students will also be taught how to argue persuasively by providing support for their personal opinions concerning the cinema.
Some of the movies we will be observing in class are at the level of Adult Accompaniment (14) or higher. The films will be selected from the following list;
1. Rain Man
2. Forrest Gump
3. Limitless
The Unit will involve outcomes such as;
1.1Examine the ideas of others in discussion to clarify and extend their own understanding
1.2 Construct ideas about issues by asking relevant questions and responding thoughtfully to questions posed
3.1 Demonstrate active listening and respect for the needs, rights, and feelings of others
· Analyze the positions of others
4.2 View a wide variety of media and visual texts, such as broadcast, journalism, film, television, advertising, CD-ROM, Internet, music videos
