15. Draw the duct layout for the heating system using thick, black lines. The duct layout is drawn on the layer
M-HVAC-SUPP
16. Draw the duct layout for the return air system using thick, black lines. The duct layout is drawn on the layer
M-HVAC-RETN
17. Indicate the duct size, CFM, and the air flow direction in each branch of the duct system and after all duct
reductions. The text and air flow direction arrow us drawn on the layer M-HVAC-ANNO
18. Draw all registers and diffusers using the correct symbols. Registers and diffusers are drawn on the layers
M-HVAC-CDFF, M-HVAC-WDFF, and M-HVAC-FDFF.
19. Indicate the register size, CFM, and the air flow direction for each register or diffuser. The text and flow arrows are drawn on the layer M-HVAC-TAGS
20. Draw all supply duct work going up or down using the correct symbol.
21. Draw all return duct work going up or down using the correct symbol.
22. Indicate the thermostat location using the correct symbol. Use a 1/8" diameter circle.
23. Add a symbols list including the assigned mechanical symbols
24. Add the Mechanical General Notes.
25. Insert the assigned Mechanical Detail Drawings.
Note:
To achieve proper line technique all Mechanical features are to be drawn with thick black lines to stand out from the general lines of the drawing. All other lines are to be thin and black.
Directions for Mechanical drawing Assignments
Locate and draw the furnace in the Utility Room.
Add a thermostat to the floor plan using the correct symbol.
Add the following detail drawings:
Mechanical Detail 03, Mechanical Detail 04, Mechanical Detail 06, Mechanical Detail 07,
Mechanical Detail 08, Mechanical Detail 09, Mechanical Detail 10, Mechanical Detail 11,
Mechanical Detail 12
Prepare a symbols list including the following mechanical symbols:
Duct with flow direction supply duct turned up
Supply duct turned down return duct turned up
Return duct turned down TURning vanes
Ceiling diffuser Thermostat
gas piping FURNACE
Add the following notes to the mechanical set:
Mechanical General Notes
Border types, colors, finished, and method of attachment for all diffusers, grills, and registers shall be coordinated with the architectural ceiling details and specifications.
Thermostat should be located 5’0” above finished floor and 9” from edge of door unless noted otherwise. Final location to be verified with the architect. Finished paint color to be selected by the owner. Manufacturer’s logo shall not be exposed.
Minimum temperature to be maintained during heating season: 70°F when 0°F outside with 15 MPH wind.
Duct layout shown is a schematic representation of design intent. Coordination with both new and existing services, including those of other trades, is required. Any major variances or discrepancies are to be reported to the architect and/or engineer.
Specifications for Heat Loss Calculations:
Download the Heat Loss Calculation Worksheet (Excel Program). Prepare a heat loss calculation for each room and each area of the structure using the Heat Loss Calculation Worksheet (Excel Program). There should be one worksheet for each area and room.
Select the U-Coefficients for Heating Load Calculations for the following construction:
Walls: 8” solid brick, furred and plastered interior
Interior Partitions: Wood frame, plastered, no insulation
Ceilings: Frame, plastered ceiling, no flooring, R-30 (9”) insulation
Floors: 4” concrete slab, stone, Frame, no ceiling, wood flooring, no insulation
Roofs: Asphalt-shingled pitched roof, plastered ceiling, R-30 (9”) insulation
Doors: 1-3/4” steel door, solid urethane foam core,
Glass door, metal frame, double or triple glass
Windows: Double glazed windows
Design Temperature:
Indoor design temperature: 70 degrees
Outdoor design temperature: 5 degrees
Duct design-sizing methods.
Using the Trane Ductulator, design and size a duct system for heating and ventilation. Method 1 uses the Constant Pressure Drop. Use a value of 0.08 for the friction per 100 feet of duct. Method 2 uses the Constant Velocity. Use a value of 1000 FPM for the velocity.
Friction loss
Less than 1000 CFM 1.10
Greater than 1000 CFM 1.05
FPM (Schools, Theaters, Public Buildings)
Recommended Velocities Maximum Velocities
Main Ducts 1000-1300 1100-1600
Branch Ducts 600-900 800-1300
Select a manufacturer for the return registers and supply diffusers and include the specifications on the drawing. Use
the Internet to search for companies that manufacture supply diffusers and return registers. Use this information to
select appropriate diffusers and registers. Suggested companies are AirMate, Hart & Cooley, and Carnes.
Design Criteria:
Face velocity for a supply outlet: 800 FPM
Return Grille velocity: 400-600 FPM
Select a furnace and list the manufacture's specifications on the drawing. Use the Internet to search for companies
that manufacture furnaces. Use this information to select an appropriate furnace. Suggested companies are Carrier,
Trane and Lennox. Suggested models are:
Trane XR90 single stage gas furnace 40”H x 28”D x 24.5”W 113,000 BTUH.
Carrier Infinity 96 40,000-120,000 BUTH
