StrongFine-MotorSkills

Yourchild'shandsmustbestrongenoughtomastercoloring,cutting,pasting,andholdingapencil- fine-motor tasksthatkidsuseeverydayinkindergarten."Byweek one,we'realreadywritingaletterof thealphabet,"saysArgandona."Ifkidscan'tholdthepencilcorrectly,theywillfallbehind."

Toholdthepenciltherightway,kidsneedtodevelopthesmallmusclesintheirpalmsandfingers. Hughessuggestsgivingyourchildapipecleanerand someCheerios(orsimilar,colorfulcereal)tomake bracelets."Itrequiresyoutopinchwithyourfingers,"sheexplains,thesamemotionneededfor graspingapencil.Oraskyourpreschoolertomistyourhouseplantswithaspraybottle,anactivitythat boostsbothwritingandscissorskills.Scribblinginclaywithfingers isafunalternativetodoingiton paperandespeciallyhelpfulforkidswhoareresistanttowritinganddrawing.(Achildcanpractice cuttingtheclayintosmallstrips too.)
