First Week Get to Know You Triangle Trivia!

Grade level: 1st

Anticipatory Set: (Motivator)

"Good morning students!

We get the privilege of being in class together for the whole school year. Let's find out how each of our classmates will make this year a great one! Let's find out if you have anything in common with one of the others in this room. Do you think you do?...We'll see!"

Introductory Activity:

1. Explain the Triangle Trivia! sheet (thanks Julie Slykhuis!)

2. Each student fills out a sheet.

3. Set a timer for 3 minutes. When the timer beeps, turn on music and have each child dance two laps around the room. Everyone needs to give 5 hand claps before the music stops.

4. Students continue filling out their triangles. (No points for this time).

Developmental Activity:

1. I put students in pairs to guess each other's clues and learn what each other enjoys or likes to do, or not like to do!

2. If time, students can switch to a new partner so more students meet each other.

Guided Practice:

1. During writing time, students use their triangle trivia to write a story about themselves making sentences out of each of the six clues in their story.

*differentiation: less confident writers can draw a picture representing the 6 triangle sections.

2. Stories and/or pictures will be posted in the classroom or in the hallway for students to admire and to get to know each other.

3. I make one too and make sure to take a turn to share mine and post it as well.

Closure:

"Were any of you surprised to find other friends who like what you do? I wonder if some of you like things that others of you really DON'T like! This year we will find out far more than 6 things about each other. It's going to be fun. The next time we use the Triangle Trivia, we're even going to add points!"

Independent Activity:

1. During free choice time, give students colored paper and have them design a Triangle Trivia for a topic they love...e.g. trains or ponies or dinosaurs.

Assessment:

1. Students are accountable to---

Complete a Triangle Trivia (T.T.) about themselves--15 pts.

Interact with partners to guess each other's T.T. spots--15 pts.

Write a story, or draw pictures, to represent the T.T.--10 pts.

Create your own Triangle Trivia--10 pts. extra credit
