MY ONE SMALL SQUARE POND DIRECTIONS

  1. Open up your Pond Template in your Class Folder.
  2. Click on the Rectangle Tool in the toolbar near the bottom of your screen.
  3. Draw (Click. Hold and Drag) a small rectangle (from the 1” to the 11” mark on the bottom ruler) leaving white space around it. Always draw from upper left to lower right.
  4. Click on the Fill Color (Paint can) icon and select black.
  5. Click on the Text Box (Paper with A) icon. Draw a text box inside the your black rectangle. Let Go. Type “By Your Full Name”. Don’t worry if a red squiggly line is under your name. The dictionary doesn’t know how to spell every name-Hopefully you know how to spell yours
  6. Highlight Your Name. Center. Change Font to Catchup. Choose Bold. Change Font Color to a LIGHT Color that will show up on black. I like HOT PINK
  7. From the Box, you already created, use what you know to create the other rectangles, square and text boxes to duplicate sample and actual book!
  8. Read and use the helpful hints below:
  1. Hold the SHIFT key down before you start drawing a rectangle to get a perfect square.
  2. Choose the same fill colors for the light colored boxes as your name. Coordinate!
  3. Except for your name and “Pond,” your other font is Times New Roman. You may need to adjust font sizes to get everything to fit.
  4. Note which letters are in capitals and lowercase.
  5. Leave space around each object so it doesn’t look crowded.
  6. Ask your teacher or a friend to critique it for you 
  1. Click on FORMAT in File Menu. Drag down to BACKGROUND. Click on pop down arrow next to white box. Drag to Fill Effect. Click on Texture Folder Tab. Scroll down and select water drops. Click APPLY.
  2. To Add Your Picture. (It must already be saved to your class folder and labeled title.jpg. Click on Insert, drag to Picture over to From File. Find your Class Folder. Select your picture. Move and resize as needed to fit in your ruler border.
  3. If you have time, insert a graphic that goes with your slide. Click on Insert, drag to Picture over to Clip Art. Type in a word or browse through a subject. Click on the graphic you would like and click on the top icon in the popup. Close (Click X.) Resize and move as needed. I just chose pencils for my graphic.
  4. It’s time to SAVE AS. Click on File and Drag to Save As. If you just SAVE, the template will be ruined. Type your first name. Everyone’s last name is “Pond.” Make sure you have your class folder open top. Ask a teacher to double-check before you push SAVE.
  5. Excellent Work!

Next Slide: Bibliography Slide

IMPORTANT: CITE YOUR SOURCES! Give Credit Where Credit is Due.

This will be your last slide when your presentation is done; but we are going to create one now so you can copy and paste your website addresses. It’ll save you time writing them down or trying to find them again, if you didn’t write them down!! Trust me on this one!

  1. Click on INSERT in File Menu and drag down to NEW SLIDE.
  2. Select the 2nd layout in the 1st row. Click OK.
  3. Type “Bibliography” in the title box.
  4. Click File. Drag to SAVE. After the first time saving using SAVE AS, your computer will remember where you want to save it and you can just click SAVE. If you want to always double check, go ahead and click SAVE AS. When it asks if you want to replace your existing file, click YES (or you will lose all your work from today.)
  5. When you copy and paste an image or find information on a website, highlight the address box. Click EDIT to COPY. Toggle to your Power point and PASTE it in your Bibliography Slide. Then toggle back for more research!
  6. Remember to always use your own words and your own voice!
  7. We’ll add a cool background later after you finish your other slides.

Your RESEARCH SLIDES:

Your research is the most important. You cannot reuse facts. The facts need to be exciting and make me want to learn more. Impress your audience!

  1. Open up your Power Point Slide Show. Click on Insert to New Slide. Choose one of the two layouts with the redheaded guy with a big nose in the bottom left corners.
  2. Add the common and scientific name of your pond creature. Use the line style icon (three bears) at the bottom of your screen. Choose 1 pt.
  3. Type in the three facts along with your connections that will impress your audience the most! Push enter to get a new bullet. If you loose your bullets, click on FORMAT. Drag to bullets and numbering. Select your favorite. Ok.
  4. Always type first. Power point, will adjust the size of your letters if you run out of room. Do not get lower than 20 points. You can always share additional information during your presentation that are not on your Power point.
  5. GRAPHICS: With your PowerPoint Slide Show open, Toggle to Internet Explorer by clicking on the blue “e” next to the start button on the very bottom of your screen. You will notice that you won’t be able to see your PowerPoint once Explorer opens up but it is! There’ll be a little icon on the right with your name. You can SEARCH using Metacrawler to find a website with pictures if you haven’t already, or click on your website addresses in your bibliography and it will take you right there. (Go SLIDE SHOW To VIEW SHOW to activate addresses.)
  6. Right Click on a picture you wish to copy and paste. Left Click Copy. Click on your PowerPoint icon. Edit-Paste. Move and resize as needed. Always use corners handlebars to resize so you keep the same proportions. Toggle back to copy and paste website address you found your pictures into your bibliography slide.
  7. Always add a border using line style. Use the Line Color (paintbrush) to choose a coordinating color.
  8. Add a background under FORMAT that coordinates with your pond slide. You can use preset gradients, create your own, or use a texture.
  9. Add a clip art that connects with your slide. Move and resize as needed.
  10. Make it look professional.
  11. Save Your Work!

POLISHING EFFECTS:

  1. Add a background to your bibliography slide. I used an actual pond picture. Real pictures for backgrounds are not always effective unless you are willing to work with your text to make it easy to read. I added borders and fill to make mine work.
  2. You can add PRESET ANIMATION…APPEAR to all your slides. Stay away from sounds that do not relate to the pond. Do not set a timer if you are doing your presentation live. You can also set a SLIDE TRANSITION but chose only one that is effective and apply it to all. I usually chose SLOW. There are all kinds of cool things too add to a power point presentation; but, never ever skimp on your research and your facts!

You may add additional slides with graphs and other action research throughout the year.

Always double-check your work. If you do something you wish you hadn’t, just click on Edit ---Undo.

It’ll undo your last 10 steps. I use Edit---Undo all the time!

When you present, smile and look at your audience.

Stand up straight and talk loudly.

Bring an artifact or wear something that connects with your presentation.

Be proud of yourself!

Have Fun! My fifth graders last year “getting it all together” for their presentation
