Gallery 14

Features New York Photographer Lois Greenfield

and Gallery 14 Member Joanna Tully

Gallery 14 is pleased to announce the opening on June of an exhibit by twophotographers: Lois Greenfield and Joanna Tully.

“Airborne,”Lois Greenfield

In her exuberant, explosive pictures, Lois Greenfield seems to have captured on filmnot just the lithe and acrobatic forms of dancers performing their art, but the purity and exhilaration of movement itself. Dancers in Ms. Greenfield's breathtaking pictures seem like a species apart, rare and wonderful creatures who have figured out how to break the bonds that hold the rest of us to earth. Without tricks or manipulation of any kind, she captures these fleeting and impossible moments in a style that is both lyrical and graphic. Her compositions have influenced a whole generation of young photographers.

Lois has created signature images for most of the major contemporary Dance companies. Many of these images can be seen in virtually every major magazine, her 1992 monograph, Breaking Bounds (Chronicle Books), as well as in her volume, Airborne (Chronicle Books,1998)

Her work is exhibited in galleries and museums around the world. Hereditorial work has appeared in Elle, Sports Illustrated, Life, Vanity Fair, Vogue and Zoom. Commercial clients such as Kodak, Sony, IBM, Pepsi, Remy Martin, Netscape, Minolta, Toshiba Sony and most notably Raymond Weil Watches, have picked up on the metaphoric potential of her images to create campaigns around her unique work.

“Rebound,”Joanna Tully

Rebound documents a critical phase in the lives of eight individuals who have suffered spinal cord injury and paralysis. The challenges they face stem from various circumstances: automobile, diving and horse riding accidents, a neurological disorder, a spinal tumor, and cerebral palsy.

Though these individuals are different in how they deal with their paralysis, they are extraordinarily the same in one importantway: they face their injuries head on and retain a positive, upbeat attitude as they devote themselves to intenserehabilitation. Each is an inspiration and all are making remarkable progress.

All of the individuals documented in this work are enrolled in a groundbreaking program at the InternationalCenter for Spinal Cord Injury at the Kennedy Krieger Institute in Baltimore, Maryland. Dr. John McDonald, the lead neurologist for thelate actor Christopher Reeve, heads the Center. In McDonald's innovative approach, Advanced Restoration Therapy, specially designed equipment stimulates normal body movements, a practice which can prompt cell regeneration and help patients' bodies "remember" how to move. With the help of electrodes that fire electrical messages into paralyzed arms and legs, patients' musclesare able to contract and gain strength as they use adapted bicycles, ellipticals, treadmills and standing equipment. Using electricity to stimulate dormant nerves and generate patterns of motion may teach them to carry signals locally, and maybe even route new connections around the injury.

Dr. John McDonald is available to talk to reporters about his work in connection with this exhibit. He can be reached through Elise Babbitt, Communications Managerat Kennedy Krieger Institute. Elise Babbitt’s cell phone number is 410-804-5375 / office: 443-923-7330.

Ms. Tully noted, “To see someone who was told that he or she would never walk again take tentative, yet strong, steps is a thrilling moment. To see someone regain function that creates a life of independence is both poignant and motivating. To know that there is hope for these individuals as they recapture their lives is truly a joyfuloccurrence for us all.”

Joanna Tully is a fine art and documentary photographer whose work has been exhibited and published widely in the U.S. Other photographs by hermay be found on the Gallery 14 website, . Ms. Tully’s photographs in this exhibit are is sponsored by the Kennedy Krieger Institute.

Gallery 14 was established in 2001 by a group of central New Jersey photographers, opening on September 14, 2001 as a center for photographers in the area. It was then probably the only gallery in New Jersey dedicated solely to photography. The Gallery is still completely run by its members who direct, operate and exhibit at the gallery along with guest photographers as well. Its exhibits have been wide ranging, from classical black and white studies of flowers and other still-lifes, dance and nude photography, to travel and street photography in exotic locations such as Japan, China, Afghanistan, Russia and Laos. Exhibits at Gallery 14 have been featured in local newspapers and local radio and television stations, its exhibits are regularly reviewed in the Newark Star Ledger, and listed in the New York Times.

The Gallery is currently continuing its tradition of showing members’ works as well as guest photographers from the New York to Philadelphia area, open on Saturdays and Sundays from 12-5 and by appointment. All exhibits open with a Friday evening reception for the public at the Gallery, and also feature an opportunity to meet the photographers and discuss their work, usually during the first weekend of the exhibit. Gallery 14 is also the site of a monthly meeting of local photographers who show their work and invite discussion and criticism in the spirit of increasing their skills and understanding of their own and others’ photographic work.
