Field Biology Research Associate

The Keith Clay lab at Indiana University is seeking a highly-motivated Research Associate tohelp with field work in southern Indiana related to two different projects: 1) collecting samples of ticks and mosquitoes multiple times per year from the same locations across multiple sites in south-central Indiana, funded by the IU Grand Challenge Prepared for Environmental Change project, and 2) overseeing field experiments and collections of the invasive grass, Microstegium vimineum (Japanese stiltgrass) and its fungal pathogens at Big Oaks National Wildlife Refuge (BONWR) near Madison, Indiana and surrounding areas funded by a grant from the USDA. The successful applicant will spend the majority of their time establishing collection sites and collecting arthropod samples, and setting up and maintaining field experiments at BONWR, under the supervision of the faculty member or postdoctoral fellow. Significant travel and occasional multi-day trips will be required so the research associate needs a driver’s license and a clean driving record. A vehicle will be provided. Processing arthropod samples and propagating experiment plant materials in the greenhouse will be conducted on campus. They will keep careful records of sample collections and locations, and data on field experiments at BONWR. Desirable skills and experience include experience in field work, ability to work in remote areas, good book keeping skills, data management and statistical analysis. Responsibilities also include some general lab maintenance, including purchasing supplies, overseeing equipment maintenance and repair, organizing and maintaining sample collections, andsupervising work of undergraduates.

B.S. or B.A. in biology, ecology, entomology, or a related field, and previous field work experience required. M.S. in biology or related field preferred. Additional training specific to work on these projects

will be provided. The initial appointment is for one year, contingent upon satisfactory performance, but can be extended for multiple years. The successful applicant must be well organized and detail-oriented, with strong analytical and interpersonal skills, and be able to work effectively with minimal supervision in the filed as part of a larger research project.
