2015 Guidelines

Program

The Faculty Research Engagement program is a grant competition funded through the STEM Research and Learning Center utilizing Research Development Funds managed by the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs. General guidelines for use of these funds are outlined in SFA policy 8.10.

The Center anticipates funding 2-3 projects in Summer 2015 with maximum faculty compensation at 2 summer salary stipends. Travel is not an allowable expense, but some student support and funding for purchase of minor equipment and supplies is allowed.

Eligibility

Faculty with a full-time, tenure track academic appointment as professor, associate professor, assistant professor, or instructor.

2015 FREG Funding Priorities:

·  Engage university students in research methodologies.

·  Design and implement research methodologies that inform and strengthen teaching and learning within one or more of the STEM disciplines. Research designs must address questions beyond assessment and evaluation of courses, curricula, or student performance.

·  Promote research capacity and scholarly productivity in STEM disciplines.

·  Expand the knowledge/research base in STEM education at the university level.

Review Criteria

Review criteria include:

·  Clear articulation of research question.

·  Strong research methodology.

·  Merit of the proposal (methodology, anticipated impact, and advancement of knowledge in the field).

·  Likelihood that project will lead to external funding and/or publication.

·  Feasibility of completing work within proposed time line and budget.

General Project Timeline

·  Summer 2015 – August 15 deadline, at minimum:

o  Literature Review

o  Detailed timeline

o  Completed IRB approval, for projects involving students as subjects

o  Brief preliminary report of project activity completed to date (no more than 2 pages).

·  Fall 2015 – Completion of initial implementation.

·  December 31 – Final project report: Recipients must complete a 3-5 page report describing the project activities and outcomes and cite any resulting/anticipated publications or proposal submissions and funding.

Proposal Deadlines

·  April 15, 2015: Proposal submission to Dr. Jana Redfield in the STEM Center.

·  April 30, 2015: Funding notification.
