About the Lecture

In 2005, the Parliament of the United Kingdom passed the Constitutional Reform Act 2005 which establishes a new, independent Supreme Court of the United Kingdomas the final court of appeal in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, and abolishes the appellate jurisdiction of the House of Lords. In this Lecture, Professor Sir David Williams will discuss the build-up to this new Supreme Court, taking into account the appropriate relationship between the House of Lords/Supreme Court and the Legislature and Executive and touching upon recent cases in administrativelaw, national security, and freedom of expression. Sir David will also address the new Supreme Court’s devolution issues on the one hand and its European connections on the other.

About the Speaker
Professor Sir David WilliamsQC, DL, LLD (Hon), MA, LLB (Cantab), LLM (Calif) read History and Law at Emmanuel College, University of Cambridge. Sir David began his distinguished academic career by teaching at the University of Nottingham, and thereafter at the University of Oxford and the University of Cambridge. At Cambridge, he became Reader in Public Law in 1976. He was also the Rouse Ball Professor of English Law from 1983-92, and the Vice-Chancellor of the University from 1989 to 1996. Sir David is widely acclaimed as the leading expert in Administrative Law, Constitutional Law, Civil Liberties, and Environmental Law.
