Extreme Programming ~ Activities for Today’s Residents’
SESSION DESCRIPTIONS AND OBJECTIVES
One-to-One Program Ideas from A to Z
This session will identify creative and innovative out-of-the-box programs that incorporate sensory stimulation with room bound residents. The session will review the importance of providing one-to-one interventions with residents.
Objectives:
1. Understand the importance of using the assessment process in obtaining cultural, educational, recreational and spiritual interests of the resident to provide one-to-one interventions.
2. Identify interventions that meet the needs of room bound residents.
3. Discuss out-of-the-box thinking A to Z.
The missing LINK.....adding TECHNOLOGY programs to the activity calendar
As technology is increasing and baby boomers are entering our facilities, activity professionals need to expand their calendars. This session will focus on ways to incorporate technology related programs in the monthly activity calendar.
Objectives:
1. Incorporate a variety of technology programs to enhance the residents’ lives.
2. Identify at least four ways to incorporate technology in the monthly activity calendar.
3. Receive a list of technology resources to implement within the facility.
Roadmap of Programs for Lower Functioning Residents
Attending this session will provide activity professionals with a variety of ideas and programs to implement which stimulate and enhance the residents’ quality of life through cognitive and sensory stimulation. At the closing of the session, attendees will be provided with resources to create a “roadmap” of programs.
Objectives:
1. Discuss the importance of implementing “Life Skill” stations in the facility.
2. Learn the importance of incorporating “Reminiscing Theme Kits” for small and large group programs.
3. Discuss creating individualized “Memory Books” for each cognitively impaired resident in the facility.
4. Discuss the importance of creating individualized “activity baskets” for each cognitively impaired resident.
5. Learn about different programs to enhance the residents’ quality of life: pet assisted, creative cooking, sensory stimulation, music, movement, intergenerational, etc.
Creative & Innovative Programs for Younger Residents
Attendees will gain an understanding that younger residents want to feel a sense of purpose, acceptance and validation. This session will review 8+ topics to offer younger residents to ensure their needs are met through programming and activities.
Objectives:
1. Gain knowledge of some of the diagnosis of younger residents.
2. Learn the importance of implementing a “Leisure Interest Survey” with the younger residents and incorporating the information in the activity calendar.
3. Discuss 8+ topics to include with younger residents: clubs, theme events, outings, pet assisted therapy, support groups, learning opportunities, wellness programs, guest speakers and technology.
4. Identify monthly programs for the younger resident.
SPEAKER BIOGRAPHY
Cathy Allen, CTRS, ACC, RCFE, has a long and varied career in the field of human development and has worked in the field of gerontology for over 20 years. In addition, she has written and published three books related to activities and memory impairment.
Cathy is a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS), Activity Consultant Certified (ACC), Certified Dementia Practitioner (CDA) and has an RCFE Administrator’s Certificate.
She currently works as a Program Director for an Adult Day Health Care Center, is an Activity Consultant for long term care & assisted living facilities, an instructor for the California Certified 36 hour Activity Leader Course and instructor of over 12 different continuing education courses.
Cathy is a professional speaker and has presented for local, state and national organizations related to activities, dementia and health care.

Anyone working with people at skilled nursing facilities, residential care homes, rehabilitation facilities, adult day care centers, home care agencies, etc. Including but not limited to: TRD’s, CNAs, home health aides, social workers, nurses, rehabilitation professionals, administrators, memory or dementia unit managers / supervisors. Clock hours earned can be used toward hours for your National Certification(s).
