Expectations for 1st Grade

To be successful in first grade at North Hills Preparatory, an incoming student should:

Learning Habits:

·  Be able to pay attention for 10-15 minutes of direct instruction at a time

·  Be able to follow one step directions accurately

Homework Habits:

·  Read 15 minutes nightly

·  Complete a reading log assignment 3 times a week

·  Complete an integration assignment 1 time a week related to our weekly theme

·  Other subject homework may be sent home periodically as needed

·  Complete homework themselves and is not written by the parent

Writing, Language, and Spelling:

·  Identify all upper and lower case letters

·  Know the sounds for all consonants and short vowels

·  Slide sounds together to read two to three letter words

·  Read basic sight words / heart words since we should know these by heart (words on the Dolch word list)

·  Hold pencil correctly

·  Make correct letter formations

·  Copy words from the board and reproduce word like sequences

·  Write full name correctly

·  Understand basic use of when to use capital or lower case letters

Math:

·  Count in sequential order up to fifty

·  Count backwards from twenty

·  Identify numbers between 0 and 20

·  Have one to one correspondence with up to twenty objects

·  Can use manipulatives to do simple addition or subtraction problems

·  Identify a square, circle, rectangle, and triangle

·  Know the days of the week and months of the year

Reading:

·  Able to read CVC words – consonant vowel consonant

·  Know at least 100 basic sight words from the Dolch list

·  Able to slide sounds together to read non-sense words

·  Identify characters, setting and problems and answer “w” questions in a story read aloud – who, what, where, where, why

·  Independently read/look at a book for 15 minutes
