World AIDS Day Fundraising Intern

September – December 2011

Positive East is looking for a dedicated and enthusiastic graduate for a four month fundraising internship. The internship would be ideal for someone looking to start a career in fundraising and will allow the successful candidate a valuable insight into the HIV sector.

Positive East is the leading HIVcharity in East London, providing a comprehensive and holistic range of services to support and enable individuals and communities to meet the challenges presented by HIV.

You will be responsible for overseeing and co-ordinating World AIDS Day community fundraising activities for Positive East under the supervision of the Fundraising Assistant. You will be part of our community fundraising group which includes members of staff and volunteers who are responsible for managing the community fundraising projects. The role will encompass a range of duties, such as community fundraising, event management, PR, charity database management and supporters’ stewardship.

The ideal candidate will be hard working, pro-active,personable, and enthusiastic about the work of the charity.

This is a voluntary position however travel and lunch expenses will be covered. The internship is available as a full time role or part time (3days a week) leading up to full time from October. The internship will be based at Positive East Stepney Centre.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Co-ordinate our annual 5K Red Run, a fun run and our World AIDS Day flagship event. The fundraising target is £10,000.
  • The overall fundraising target for World AIDS Day 2011 is £20,000.
  • Co- ordinate and oversee street and underground station collections.
  • Co-ordinate and project manage any necessary World AIDS Day fundraising events organised by Positive East.
  • Recruit, manage and motivate volunteers for collections and community events.
  • Research and contact local pubs/ clubs/ churches to organise fundraising activities (e.g. quiz nights in pubs, collections in churches).
  • Project manage fundraising activities with warm existing venues.
  • Contact local schools/ colleges/ universities to organise community fundraising events, using our World AIDS Day fundraising pack.
  • Attend and represent Positive East at fundraising and awareness building days during World AIDS Day.
  • Write press releases and update social mediaabout World AIDS Day activities.
  • Steward World AIDS Day supporters, including volunteers, and update/store their details on Raisers Edge database.
  • Co-ordinate the administration and banking of community donations, collections and events, in liaison with the Finance Officer.
  • Produce WAD newsletters to promote forthcoming events and WAD report.
  • Attend community fundraising group monthly meetings to share suggestions, feedback, keeping up to date with the progression of the events.

Experience and skills required

  • No previous fundraising experience required; however the applicant should have event management experience and a good understanding of community fundraising and its challenges.
  • Good understanding of issues that affect people living with HIV.
  • Understanding of Customer Relationship Management.
  • Excellent communication skills; ability to express oneself clearly and concisely.
  • Strong interpersonal skills; ability to deal with a range of people.
  • Excellent organisation skills; ability to multi task.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Strong research skills.
  • Ability to use own initiative and manage own workload while working as part of a team with fundraising department, other members of staff and volunteers involved in the fundraising activities.
  • Strong IT skills, computer literate.
