EUROPEANJOURNALISM-FELLOWSHIPSinBERLIN

JournalistsfromacrossEurope,theUnitedStates,RussiaandtheArabicregionareinvitedtoapplyfortheEuropeanJournalism-Fellowships,offeredbytheInternationalCenterforJournalismatFreieUniversitätBerlin.Participantsaregiventheopportunitytotakeatwo-semesterleavefromtheirprofessionalpositionsandspendasabbaticalyearofresearchatFreieUniversitätBerlin,wideningtheirknowledgewhilepursuingamajorresearchproject.Atthesametime,theprogrammeenablesparticipantstonetworkwithprofessionalinternationalcolleagues.

TheprogrammestartsinOctober2018andendsinJuly2019.Highlyqualifiedjournalistsineitherstaffpositionsor freelanceemploymentwith severalyearsofprofessionalexperience areeligibleto apply.Themostimportantelementofthefellowshipapplicationisanexposéforanacademic-journalisticresearch projecttobepursuedinBerlin.ApplicationscanbesubmittedinGermanorinEnglish.Writtenproofcertifyinggoodknowledgeofthe Germanlanguageisrequiredfor participation(e.g.Goethe-Institut,GermanAcademicExchangeService).

StandardFellowship:forjournalistswithatleast5yearsofexperience.Standardfellowsreceiveamonthlystipendof1,500Eurosforthedurationoftenmonths.

JuniorFellowship:forjournalists withaboutfive yearsofprofessionalexperience.JuniorFellowsreceiveamonthlystipendof1,000upto1,100Eurosforthedurationoftenmonths.

TheEuropeanJournalism-FellowshipsarefundedbyrenownedmediaenterprisesandfoundationsincooperationwithFreieUniversitätBerlin.CurrentsponsorsincludetheBMWFoundationHerbertQuandt,theFAZIT-Foundation(FrankfurterAllgemeineZeitung),HelsinginSanomatFoundationandtheFoundationPresse-HausNRZ,aswellasthreemajorpoliticalfoundations:Friedrich-Ebert-Foundation,Konrad-Adenauer-FoundationandHeinrich-Böll-Foundation.

Since1999,morethan180journalistsfrommorethan30nationshavebenefitedfromtheopportunitytospendasabbaticalyearofresearchinBerlin.Overtheyears,aclosealumninetworkofjournalistsinEuropehasemerged.TheprogrammeEuropeanJournalism-FellowshipsoftheInternationalCenterforJournalismatFreieUniversitätBerlinhasestablisheditselfasanimportantinstitutionforjournalistsattheEuropeanlevel.ForthefutureofEuropeanintegration,especiallytheconvergenceofEasternandWesternEurope,itwillbeincreasinglyimportantforjournaliststohavespecificknowledgeabouttheirneighbouringcountries,tohaveinternationalcontacts,andtobecomeversedindifferentcultures.Ouraimistosupporttheprofessionalandpersonaldevelopmentofjournalistsinthisspirit.
