Etter/Psych Film Analysis for Adolescence: Mean Girls Unit 3, Mod. 5

Part I: Standards Involved and how they connect & these are just ones we’ve covered:

SSPFR1 The student will explain selected historical and contemporary perspectives and practices of psychologists.

·  Looking at the actions taken by our main characters and how each school of thought would view them: cognitive, biological, socio-cultural, behavioral, humanistic and psychodynamic.

SSPFR2 The student will explain the research methods and the types of statistics used in the field of psychology.

·  How did Cady and her buddies conduct their research on Regina and her impact on other peers?

Case study, observation, ethical or not, etc.

SSpBC3.b Explain the developmental models of Freud, Piaget, Kohlberg, and Erickson.

·  What signs of Kohlberg’s “conventional moral reasoning” do we see from the actors?

·  How are Piaget’s “formal operational stage,” Freud’s “genital,” & Erikson’s “identity vs. conformity” stages evident?

SSPVB2 The student will evaluate assessment tools and theories in personality.

·  How do we see various personality perspectives in the film: psychodynamic, humanistic, trait and/or social-cognitive?

SSPSP1.a Explain phenomenon that result from the influence of the social environment on the individual and vice versa; include obedience, social facilitation, social loafing, bystander apathy, conformity, groupthink, group polarization, and deindividuation.

·  You’ll need your book for this one…

·  How do we see ideas of social environment, social loafing, conformity and deindividuation, etc. in the film?

Part II: Directions, read and follow carefully:

For each of the above standard, you need to find 5 instances in the movie that connect the film to the content in the standard. Make sure you label each standard and number 1-5 underneath it. These do need to be in complete sentences with meaningful information. By the time you are done, you will have written 25 ways in which a popular movie connects to our standards mandated by the state of Georgia for this class. I suggest simply taking notes while watching the film and filling in the rest when the movie is done. This is due at the end of the class period on Friday. Feel free to start by using the back of this sheet.

For example:

SSPFR1:

1.)  Socio-cultural perspective – Cady’s behavior tends to change based on who she is hanging around with. When she is with the plastics, she is more of a snob but when she’s with Damian and Janice she is more genuine.
