The Casio Victoria University Senior Mathematics Competition 2017

Dear HOD Mathematics,

The CasioVictoria University Senior Mathematics Competition is again underway. This is an important competition as it not only allows us to recognise the top Mathematicians but also allows top students, from all regions, to meet and share ideas.

The format of the competition is remaining the same as in previous years with a preliminary round, which is 90 minutes long and marked within the school. Results are then forward to the regional markersto allow us to select the top 200 competitors. The papers then forwarded to NZAMT are used to select the 15 finalists. Both rounds consist of a written paper prepared by Examiners appointed by NZAMT. Calculators may be used but language dictionaries are not permitted.

Schools wishing to enter students in 2017 are asked to complete the entry form and email it to

with payment of $2 per entry to account: 03-0166-0203131-00

Ref: Casio and “School Name” byTuesday 11thApril 2017 (last week, term 1).

The first round is on Thursday 18thMay. Papers will be mailed to you on, or about, the 12thMay. If you have not received your entries by 16th May please contact Sue Scott at or NZAMT as above.

The top 15 students will be flown to Wellington for the final round of the competition to be held on Friday 1st September.

Finally this competition would not be possible without sponsorship received from Casio. They strongly support Mathematics education in New Zealand and we ask that you consider offering them your support when ordering mathematical resources. We also would like to acknowledge the great support from the Mathematics and Statistics Department of Victoria University of Wellington in helping us organise the competition as well as providing sponsorship.

Gillian Frankcom-Burgess

President NZAMT

Points to Note:

  • In general, Year Twelve or Thirteen students studying full time in a New Zealand secondary school are eligible to enter, provided they are nineteen or under on 1st July in the year of entry.Students at lower year levels may enter, BUT a student may only compete in the finals twice.
  • It is assumed that all scripts submitted to NZAMT are of students who can attend the finals in Wellington.
  • All entrants will sit the Preliminary paper in their own schools or in such a place as the school shall decide. The school will be responsible for supervision. All entrants will sit the paper on the morning of Thursday18thMay. There can be NO exceptions to this as the answers go on the website for teachers to download on that night.
  • Teachers will mark the papers of entrants from their school, and send all those above the given mark to the regional marker, to be received by 1stJune.
  • NZAMT will check the marking of the scripts forwarded to it, and select the top 15 entrants to sit the Final paper. These 15 will include the best student from each of the 10 regions, with the remaining places being filled in order of merit on the Preliminary paper.
  • In the choice of finalists and the awarding of prizes, the decisions of the examiners appointed by the NZAMT shall be final.
  • Copies of past papers and solutions can be downloaded from the NZAMT or Eton Press (sponsors prior to 2015) websites.
