Ergüç-1 Laser Diode Driver

Introduction

Normally an encapsulated laser diode (LD) consists of

- LD

- Thermistor for temperature feedback

- Photodiode for light feedback

- TE cooler for cooling

LD : Laser Diode

TH : Thermistor

PD: Photo diode

Ergüç-1 is a driver handles all of these components and consists mainly of two parts.

- LD regulator

- Temperature regulator

The diode regulator regulates the output power, hence light intensity of the laser diode. The photo diode inside the laser diode case is used as the main feedback to the regulating unit. Thus, the laser beam power hence intensity is directly controlled. The current and the

voltage are continuously monitored and regulated to secure the current and voltage supply levels.

The second part controls the temperature of the laser diode. Inside the laser diode case there is often a Peltier element (TE Cooler) and a thermistor. The temperature is measured continuously as the feedback from the thermistor. When the temperatures tend to rise, a higher current is applied to the Peltier to sink more heat from the laser diode.

The level of the voltage applied to the Peltier element is shown by a LED-bar indicator at the panel (TE cooler). Thus the following quantities are continuously measured and kept stabile:

- light intensity

- drive current

- drive voltage

- temperature

Although the intensity of the light is controlled continuously, it is not measured absolutely. The absolute intensity of each system is calibrated as a function of power with temperature corrections. This means that at any working power corresponds to its particular light intensity. Laser diode current and voltage is monitored directly at the panel of the ERGÜÇ-1, so the multiplication of these values gives the working power. Any desired power (max. 4 W) is set by a 10-turn potentiometer (Power) at the panel.

The next ERGÜÇ-2 has an LCD monitor showing the current, voltage, power and temperature.

The user panel of ERGÜÇ-1

It’s possible to modulate the beam by up to 100 kHz. At the panel as well as rear of the instrument there is a pair of contacts (Puls in) 0-10 V input to switch the beam. This gives the possibility to user to use own pulse generator.

An extra output directly from the thermistor of the laser diode case placed at the panel (Thermistor). The user can apply any standard temperature measurement unit to detect the temperature of the laser diode.

The spikes and transients in the 220V supply or electromagnetic radiation in the air can damage any laser system if the system has weak filters against. Ergüç-1 driver system is equipped by noise filter in every subsection. The laser diode is short circuited when the system is off. This avoids the laser diode from electromagnetic

radiation when the system is off. When the system is turned on, after the transients stabilized, a relay removes the short circuitry.

A LED to indicate removal of the short circuitry is placed at the panel (Ready). All system is automatically functions, without need to any assistance from the user.
