The NHS Lanarkshire Department of Medical Education seekenthusiastic trainees looking to develop an interest in teaching and training to a clinical teaching fellow post for anperiod of 12 months. The post will become vacant in August 2014.

Working in association with the Director of Medical Education, the Lead Clinical Skills Officer and the three Hospital Sub-deans, the post-holders will contribute to the delivery of medical teaching in medicine and surgery. If they have been trained in a specialty (for example obstetrics and gynaecology) they may also be asked to contribute to teaching in this field.

As relevant to their previous clinical experience they will also contribute to the development and delivery of the NHSL skills-based teaching programme for junior trainees. This includes those in ALS, Medical Emergencies, Procedural skills, FY curriculum skills, Recognition and management of the sick patient.

The post holders will develop and implement teaching materials utilising the e-based learning/teaching facility developed by NHSL and contribute to the further development of the interface.

The post-holders are expected to undertake personal study in the field of medical education and, in particular, to complete a Diploma in Medical Education during their year’s attachment. Paid time during working hours is provided to enable this. Course fees will be paid by the department.

Additional responsibilities and involvement in departmental research will be expected as outlined by the Director of Medical Education.

The post-holders are expected to maintain and develop their clinical skills through the weekly clinical session provided (duties for which will be arranged by local negotiation dependent on the previous experience of the trainee / their desired clinical development) and through a commitment to regular on-call activity in evening / weekend hours. Banding will be at 1C however their pay banding will be adjusted to reflect the level of their on-call activity.

The post holders are expected to comply with formal supervisory and assessment processes in regard to both their clinical and teaching activities.

Although particularly suitable for trainees holding a NTN as an Out of Programme Experience, consideration will be given to those who would wish a LAS contract instead. Trainees who seek the post as an OOPE should have attained approval for this prior to interview.
