Introduction

California private schools serving elementary or high school students are required by state law to file an affidavit or statement each year with the State Superintendent of Public Instruction. Each year the California Department of Education publishes statistics on these schools. This report is a summary of selected information submitted by the private schools for the 2006-07 school year.

In accordance with the Budget Act of 2006, this report includes only California private schools reporting enrollments of at least six students. The following characteristics may be noted from the data contained in this publication:

  • Of the 584,983 students enrolled in private schools in California, 426,642 were enrolled in elementary grades (kindergarten through grade eight) and 158,341 were enrolled in secondary grades (grades nine through twelve).
  • Sixty-nine percent of the students enrolled in private schools in California in 2006-07 attended schools with a religious affiliation (denomination).
  • Roman Catholic schools accounted for 40 percent of the total number of church-affiliated schools and served 58 percent of the students attending such schools.
  • Counties having 10 percent or more of their total students enrolled in private schools in 2006-07 were: Alameda (10.9 percent), Contra Costa (10.0 percent), Los Angeles (10.4 percent), Marin (18.8 percent), Napa (13.7 percent), Orange (10.3), San Francisco (30.1 percent), San Mateo (16.0 percent), Santa Clara (13.3 percent), Santa Cruz (10.9 percent), and Ventura (10.0 percent).
  • Between 2000-01 and 2006-07 the number of schools reporting 25 or more students decreased by 14 percent and the total enrollment in these schools decreased by 9 percent.
  • Since 2000-01, public school enrollment has increased from 6,050,895 to 6,288,237, a 3.9 percent increase, while private school enrollment has decreased from 648,564 to 584,983, a 9.2 percent decrease.
