St Giles has 60 years’ experience in providing high quality English courses. From the moment our students arrive, we expect our staff to work hard to ensure that they are learning and having the educational experience of a lifetime.

The St Giles group was founded in London in 1955. Since then it has grown in England, the USA and Canada and now includes schools in London (Central and Highgate), Brighton, Eastbourne, San Francisco, New York and Vancouver. All of the UKschools are accredited by the British Council and are members of English UK. As well as teaching EFL, St Giles has long been involved in teacher training. Brighton, Highgate, San Francisco and New York run courses for CELTA and are approved by Cambridge ESOL. St Giles London Central and Eastbourne run courses for the Trinity College Certificate in TESOL. St Giles Brighton runs courses for the Delta Modules 1 and 2. Since 2005 St Giles International has also run Junior Summer Camps in various locations in the UK and North America.

St Giles Brighton was founded in 1969. In 2004 the school expanded when the Platinum Centre, offering courses for professionals, was opened.It currently occupies 4 buildings in Marlborough Place and Church Street.

St Giles Brighton attracts students from more than 50 different countries, of varying ages and with varying needs. The minimum age is 16 and the minimum length of stay is one week. The average age of our students is 24 and the average length of stay is about 8 weeks. The majority of our students wish to improve their performance in English for work, travel or for further education. Each student has his/her particular set of language learning needs and we expect our teachers to be to help our students meet those needs.

Our students expect teachers to be knowledgeable, well-informed, well-prepared, efficient, helpful, punctual, engaging, motivating and adaptable.

The Role

All Teachers: deliver high quality English language teaching and effective learning of English that meets the needs of different students taking into account individual learning styles.

Reporting to: the Director of Studies

Duties

Teaching

Plan, prepare and teach lessons on the full range of courses/levels offered by the school.

Monitor progress and provide feedback regularly in fortnightly one-to-one meetings to help manage students’ performance throughout their course.

Actively promote learner autonomy.

Analyse student needs to inform weekly lesson planning.

Set and correct homework and, where appropriate, add comments which will serve as a useful guide to students.

Be culturally sensitive when planning the content of lessons.

Make every effort to create a classroom atmosphere which is conducive to maximising student involvement.

Teach at any of the school’s sites.

Administrative Duties

Complete teaching related administrative tasks to specified standards.

Write reports on individual students when requested.

Ensure on a weekly basis that their students are aware of the nearest fire exit and the fire evacuation procedure.

General

Ensure safeguarding, and that guidelines are applied and upheld in line with standards and policy for the following areas: the Prevent Duty, Child protection, Equality Diversity and Inclusion, and Health and Safety.

Participate fully as a member of the teaching team.

Attend weekly teacher’s meetings.

Attend teacher development sessions.

Actively engage in professional development to ensure quality and high standards in teaching in learning are maintained.

Be prepared to attend conferences and workshops whenever possible.

Arrive 15 minutes before lessons are due to start.

Start and finish lessons punctually.

Liaise with other teachers when sharing a class.

Be prepared to take part in the Social Programme.

Academic
Qualifications / University Degree
Cambridge CELTA or Trinity TESOL / Cambridge Delta
Post-graduate MA in ELT/TESOL or related subjects
Knowledge & Understanding / High proficiency in English equivalent CEFR C2/IELTS Band 9.
Effective teaching in a setting with a learner-centred approach.
Experience / 2 years’+ experience post TEFL qualification.
Evidence of a commitment to Continuous Professional Development.
Skills / Effective communication skills, both orally and in writing, to a variety of audiences.
