This is a silent study period. Everyone will quietly work on the assignment (no groups allowed).

  1. Due to my absence, your assigned homework that was due today will be collected next class. Don’t lend/borrow homework from anyone to copy because it will be checked for plagiarism.
  2. Re-read “Speech in the Virginia Convention” on pages 101-103 and locate these speech devices in the speech: Restatement, Repetition, Parallelism, and Rhetorical Questions.
  3. Do page 38 of the workbook writing down examples (actual quotes) you found in the speech. I’m going to check your quotes, so make sure you use good examples that represent each speech device and don’t just pick random quotes.
  4. Get out a sheet of paper and head it properly (MLA style) as it will be handed in for Homework credit.
  5. Just like you did two classes ago for Fredrick Douglas’ speech: Identifyany 4 speech devices used in Patrick Henry’s “Speech in the Virginia Convention” and for each device write at least 4 complete sentences using a quote to explain how the speech device influences listeners. Yes, you can use the examples you already put on page 38 of the workbook, but don’t lend/borrow answers from anyone to copy because I will check for plagiarism!
  6. Then, turn your Lit book to page 109, and read “Relate New Vocabulary to Familiar Words.”Get out a blank index card and create vocab flashcard #31 and 32 with the Latin Prefix “uni-” and the Latin root “-anima-”. Make sure you write Unit 1: “Integrated” on the front of the card and provide two words (pneumonic devices) on the back.
  7. On the same paper you started for homework, do both Vocabulary exercises on page 109 (in complete sentences) following the instructions in the book. Pay special attention to when it says explain the meaning/your reasoning.
  8. Study all speech devices from pages 96 plus the term “Speech,” and also study the term “allusion” from page 98 (for a total of nine terms) and know the definition of each one for the quiz next class. You should also be able to identify which speech device is used by looking at examples.
  9. All homework (workbook pages and the paper you wrote) will be collected next class.
  10. Any discipline issues or class disruptions will be brought to my attention and dealt with upon my return.
