Primary Job Purpose
To act as the principal heritage advisor to the HMS Victory capital works project
Provide Heritage Impact Assessmentforall proposed works impacting on the fabric of the ship and No. 2 dock
Assist in the implementation of the Conservation Management Plan for HMS Victory
Provide expert advice to colleagues and contractors on all matters in respect of Heritage, Conservation, and Impact Assessment
Ensure that all ongoing maintenance and conservation workson HMS Victory by staff, volunteers and contractors are compliant with best practice in heritage and conservation

Decision making authority and freedom to act

Ability to work well independently and as part of a team with minimal supervision
Work alongside contractors on the ship and use specialist knowledge to direct their physical interventions
Proposes, manages and reports on projects to explore, record and make public the archaeology of HMS Victory.
Undertakes Heritage Impact Assessments for all work proposed for HMS Victory and No.2 Dock in accordance with the agreed programme of capital works on the ship.

Financial responsibility

Delegated authority from the Head of Historic Ships (Band F) for budget to manage archaeological recording and archive.

Information systems

Share and contribute specialist knowledge to in-house team and contractors both onsite and at regular meetings
Record and manage the data relating to the restoration and ongoing conservation of HMS Victory
Oversee the development and implementation of the information database and associated archives
Ensure all RAMS, Permits to Work and associated SHE documents are maintained and implemented

People management

Manage and work with Digital Data Manager to deliver the information database relating to the ongoing conservation of the ship
Engage and manage a range of different contractors and be able to give clear instruction regarding works

Communication and relationships

Work closely with NMRN Conservators and Planned Conservation Team to ensure all work is undertaken to the highest professional standards
Attend and produce reportsfor the wider project team and Project Board at regular meetings
Develop and maintain active communication both within the immediate team and other directorates across the museum
Promote the role of archaeology and conservation within the HMS Victory Project through social media, publication, lectures and broadcast
Have excellent customer service skills and ability to communicate significance of work to the general public

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

Subject / Mandatory
Knowledge / Identification and practical understanding of heritage significance and impact assessment
High degree of specialist understanding of the principles of archaeological recording
High degree of understanding of the material properties of historic timber structures
Knowledge and experience of CAD-based softwarepackages
Strong verbal and report writing skills
Experience / Experience in a similar role (preferably 2 years post qualification) in heritage consultancy or a comparable role in the heritage sector
Demonstrable experience of producing Desk-based Assessments, Options Appraisals and Heritage Impact Assessments
Project management experience
Strategic approach to problem solving
Physical working onsite alongside a changing team of contractors
Experience of database management
