English 9/The Odyssey

Odyssey Group Assignment

8 Books (5,6,8,9,10,11,12,13) (Teachers do selections 2-4; 7; selections 16-24)

Groups of 3 or 4 are assigned a book (one of the 8 listed above).

Each group will be responsible for the following:

  • to create an exam for themselves from their book (exam will be 1/21 Thursday or 1/22 Friday))
  • to create a lesson plan for a one period long presentation, which will include:
  • a reading guide for their book with 12 vocabulary words and six reading guide questions
  • 3 (or 4) two minute scripts (one for each passage chosen - students will act these out for the class as part of the presentation)
  • a google slide show of 5-7 slides that tells the story of their book using visuals
  • 3 (or 4) sets of 7 thought questions, moving from the concrete to the abstract (one for each passage chosen)
  • to lead a one period presentation on their book in order

Here is what the actual presentation will look like (order is suggested - time breakdown should be followed)….

Facilitate a discussion based on Passage 2 (using 5-7 thought questions that should be on one slide after the images) 7 minutes

Read Passage Three Out Loud - 3 minutes

Facilitate a discussion based on Passage 3 (using 5-7 thought questions that should be on one slide after the images) 7 minutes

Read Passage Four Out Loud - 3 minutes

Facilitate a discussion based on Passage 4 (using 5-7 thought questions that should be on one slide after the images) 7 minutes

Making Connections among the passages 3 (or 4) 3minutes (optional)

1/21 or 1/22 Exam - Student Made

The exam will have 12 vocabulary words and 3 passages on it, from which students will be expected to do 9 vocabulary words at 4 points each (36 points) and analyze two passages (32 points each)

Each vocabulary word will need to be used in a true, original sentence about The Odyssey. (4 points each)

Each passage will be approximately 30 lines long…and worth 32 points...

Questions: (worth 8 points each)

  1. How does setting and/or character function in this passage? Explain.
  2. What is the tone of this passage? How does the tone help the reader understand character or setting in a more comprehensive manner?
  3. What figurative language is in this passage? What does it mean? How is it used? How does it affect the tone?
  4. What is the big idea (Odyssey Concept) in this passage? How is this big idea based on specific textual evidence?

Lesson Plan (in more depth)

I will be responsible for the reading quiz which I will take from the reading guide questions and vocabulary you created in Assignment #1.

Part One: 5 minutes of class time during your presentation

Storytelling – using 7-12 slides, tell the story of your “book.” Be sure to connect it to the previous “book.” You should use visuals here.

Part Two: 6 or 8 minutes of class time during your presentation

Acting out 3 passages – write 3 or 4 original scripts of about 2 minutes. Each script should modernize one of the passages you will be reading aloud and should express the main points in an entertaining way.

Part Three: 10 minutes of class time during your presentation

Teaching passage 1 – read aloud passage 1 from the book. Ask 3-5 thought questions of the class about the passage. Call on people. Ask follow up questions. Help the class to understand this part of the text.

Part Four: 10 minutes of class time during your presentation

Teaching passage 2 – read aloud passage 2 from the book. Ask 3-5 thought questions of the class about the passage. Call on people. Ask follow up questions. Help the class to understand this part of the text.

Part Five: 10 minutes of class time during your presentation

Teaching passage 3 – read aloud passage 3 from the book. Ask 3-5 thought questions of the class about the passage. Call on people. Ask follow up questions. Help the class to understand this part of the text.

Part Six: 10 minutes of class time during your presentation

Teaching passage 3 – read aloud passage 3 from the book. Ask 3-5 thought questions of the class about the passage. Call on people. Ask follow up questions. Help the class to understand this part of the text.

Part Seven (if time permits during your presentation)

Teaching themes– ask several thought questions that compare and contrast the three passages you have taught and that move up to more abstract considerations of Odyssey themes.

Creating your Slide Show

40 minutes of class work time – homework needed to coordinate it…

Create a Google Slide Show and share it with each other and me by 10pm on ______. Title it: Odyssey Slide show, last name, last name, last name.

Assignment process:

- Make a list of 7 to 11 of the most important plot points from your book

- Find visuals for each of these plot points

- Put them in the correct order

- Give a title to each slide (no more than 10-12 words on a slide)

- Put last name on what each person has done.

Creating your Scripts for your presentation

Write 3 or 4 original scripts of about 2 minutes. Each script should modernize one of the passages you will be reading aloud and discussing in an entertaining way.

Assignment #4 has 3 or 4 parts

1. A 2 minute script based on passage 1.

2. A 2 minute script based on passage 2.

3. A 2 minute script based on passage 3.

4. A 2 minute script based on passage 4.

Assignment process:

- A 2 minute script is approximately 2 pages long, typed.

- Use script format for these scripts:

oOdysseus: Hello Calypso.

oCalypso: What’s up, Odysseus?

oOdysseus: Nothing – just wondering if you would let me go?

- Short, quick back-and-forth lines are better than big chunks of text.

- Modernize each script – make it entertaining – make it funny or compelling in some way.

- Even as you modernize them and make them entertaining, keep them appropriate and keepthem related to the original in terms of meaning.

- Make a list of props you will need – you will either be acting these scenes out live or be

filming them and presenting them to the class.

- Brainstorm how you will modernize each passage – start writing – check ideas with the

teacher.
