  • Identify Elements of an Argument: claim, counterclaim, supporting reasons, and evidence from the article
  • Explain the meaning of words and phrases used in context such as “quilt” and “interwoven”
  • Know how to differentiate between the two metaphors “salad bowl” and “melting pot” and explain their significance to America
  • There’ll be 5 to 8 questions asking you to do some literary analysis of the article (study the PPT which is uploaded onEngrade)
  • Essay Writing: Support why “America is an improbable idea” based on your reading and understanding of the article. (4-5 paragraphs in length)

  1. “Once Upon A Time” Short Story by Nadine Gordimer(50% of entire grade)

-What to study:

  • Cite text evidence to support analysis of the text (Reading Guide questions)
  • Make inferences about the theme(s)of the story and use details or evidence from the story to support this theme
  • Connect the characters’ actions to the events taking place in South Africa during apartheid to identify a theme
  • Analyze text structure and why the author makes these choices
  • Be familiar with the 6 Elements of a Fairy Tale on page 17 and apply them to this story as well as other fairy tales that you have read before
  • Once again, there’ll be 5 to 8 questions asking you to perform literary analysis of the story (study the PPT which is uploaded onEngrade)
  • Grammar: Greek/Latin root words & Prepositional Phrases

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs):

  1. Am I allowed to use a cheat sheet? – Yes! You are allowed to use 1 sheet of A4 paper front and back for this exam. This time, you may use a cheat for both parts of the exam, which are the essay and short answer questions. However, you must turn in your cheat sheet to me in advance no later than 3:30pm Thursday, October 6th with your name on it. If you fail to follow these instructions, this may jeopardize your chances of using a cheat sheet on the exam. You will not be allowed to bring any papers with you into the examination room, but instead, your proctor will return your cheat sheet to you before the exam begins.
  1. When can I ask questions if I don’t understand something on the hot sheet?

Besides your normal class time, you may come and ask me questions during the following times/days:

-Review week: Tuesday through Friday 3:15pm – 4:00pm

-I’m also available on some days during 4th period. So if you have study hall during these times, you may come after you get permission from your teacher first.
