ENG 241: American Literature Survey IIPreparation for Examination #2

Your second hour examination will consist of a matching section [60 points] and a short answer section [140 points. The examination, then, is worth 200 points, or 20% of the course grade. An explanation of the examination's format follows.

For the matching portion of the examination, you will place the letter of the alphabet corresponding to the correct poem or story title in the blank preceding the item just as you did on examination #1. All titles will appear as the correct answer to more than one question. The author biographies, essays, and other supporting materials will not be covered in this portion of the examination. Of course, I will not include character names in any of the quotations, for that information would give each answer away. All of the assigned poems will not be covered on the examination; see the matching key below to determine the poems for which you are responsible on the examination. Here are the matching key that will be distributed at the examination and a few sample questions:

Section I: 30 Matching [2 points each = 60 points].

Place the letter of the alphabet corresponding to the correct story title in the blank preceding each item. Please print in capital letters when you supply your answers to avoid the confusion that sometimes results from presentation of lower case cursive handwriting. The stories are presented in alphabetical order and assigned a letter of the alphabet below.

A / "Emperor of Ice-Cream, The" by Wallace Stevens
B / "Babylon Revisited" by F. Scott Fitzgerald
C / “Barn Burning” by William Faulkner
D / “Chicago” by Carl Sandburg
E / “Cool Tombs” by Carl Sandburg
F / "Design" by Robert Frost
G / "Hands" by Sherwood Anderson
H / “In a Station at the Metro” by Ezra Pound
I / "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock" by T.S. Eliot
J / “The Man Who Was Almost a Man” by Richard Wright

Q / "Sunday Morning" by Wallace Stevens
R / "This is Just to Say" by William Carlos Williams
S / “Yet I do Marvel” by Countee Cullen
T / “The Young Housewife” by William Carlos Williams

Here are two sample questions; use the key to select the correct answers:

1. _____We have one sap and one root—/Let there be commerce between us.

2. _____ "I only stayed a minute. I take one drink every afternoon, and no more."

Section II: Short Answer/ID Items [20 points each =140 Points]

For section two of the examination, I will list ten items from assigned short stories and you will choose to write about seven of the items. Each ID item will be an object, a character name, or a quotation. For each of these items, you will write an 6-10 sentence discussion explaining the function of the item in the story. Strong answers will present examples and details from the relevant story to support your judgment regarding how the item functions to further the plot or conflict or to help us to understand a character’s situation or motivation. Each answer will begin with the name of the author and story, so it would be best to keep the matching key before you as you complete this section of the examination.

Since you will NOT be using your books for this examination, you will receive the entire examination [matching and ID sections] in a single document.
