TEXTBOOK:Basic College Mathematics (3rd edition) by Elayn Martin-Gay (Required).

(Any scientific calculator can be used for the class.)

MATHCENTER:Check the MathCenter for the times that they will be open.

Tutors are available to help you with ODD NUMBERED PROBLEMS you encounter in your text. When visiting the MathCenter come prepared. Tutors expect you to have read through the section(s). They are not expected to teach you each section and then work each problem for you in the exercises. The problem(s) you are working on should be written down and you have made every attempt to solve the problem(s) yourself. When they are busy they have a policy of not more than 10 minutes with each student. Please fill out the contact card when visiting the MathCenter.

PREREQUISITES:The incoming student should have a working knowledge of basic arithmetic. This is equivalent to receiving a grade of 2.0 or better in MATH 080 (Basic Arithmetic). You should be very familiar with operations with whole numbers, fractions, and decimals.

PURPOSE OF THEAny student earning a course grade of 2.0 or better in MATH 093 should be prepared

COURSEto enter MATH 096 (Fundamentals of Algebra).

COURSEThere will be 30 instructional sessions. The sections of material to be covered at

ORGANIZATION:each session and the dates for the tests are provided with this handout.

Homework questions may be asked the first 15-30 minutes of each class meeting followed by a review sheet or the previous class meeting. You should come prepared for each class meeting. Attendance at all class sessions is required. If you are absent when a test is scheduled you will receive 0 points. The topics in mathematics are dependent on one another, as few as two or three absences in a semester can severely hinder your performance. You will be held responsible for any announcements made and sections covered during your absence.

INCOMPLETES:Incomplete Contracts will not be given in this course because a student is behind in

the course work or where the cumulative average is below 60%. By college policy

a student must have completed a minimum of two-thirds of the total course work with a grade point average of at least 1.0, and the reason for not completing the course must be beyond the student’s control, such as an extended illness. If an incomplete is granted by the instructor, the student must obtain from the instructor an incomplete grade request form and sign it.

WITHDRAWAL:Official withdrawal from the course is absolutely necessary. Failure to withdraw and

meet incomplete requirements will result in a course grade of 0.0 and will become part of your grade point average. WITHDRAWAL DEADLINE: __Nov. 30, 2007 No instructor withdrawal is given after the semester is over and you failed to withdraw for any reason.

EVALUATION:A) There will be 5 in class chapter tests (chapters 5, 6, 7, 10, 11). Each test is worth 50 points. One page of notes is allowed for any in class chapter test. (Both sides are allowed) If you are absent the day of a test you will receive 0 points. If you do poorly on an in class test or are absent then your midterm exam will replace any “ONE” of your prior test scores, and your final exam will replace any “ONE” of your last three test scores. There are no retake tests for any reason.

B) There will be a Midterm Exam over chapters 5, 6, 7 and 8 worth 100 points. There will be a final exam over chapters 4 - 11 on the last day of class and will be worth 100 points. One page of notes is also allowed for both exams.

C) There will be 13 homework assignments. Each assignment is worth 5 points. Your best 10scores will be recorded. No late homework is accepted for any reason, i.e. family deaths, illness,

car problems, etc. All necessary work must accompany each answer.

D) There will be at least 25 two point in class quizzes each worth 2 points. These quizzes could be at the beginning of class and cover recent material or they could be at the end of class and serve as a review for the days work. You are allowed to work in groups to solve the problems. All necessary work must be shown neatly.

FINAL GRADE:There will be 600 possible points. 250 from the 5 in class tests.

50 from the 2 take home tests

50 from the homework assignments

50 from the quizzes

100 from the midterm exam

100 from the final exam.

Your grade will be determined by the following scale: (Your score/600)*100

PERCENTGRADEPERCENTGRADE

90 - 1004.070 - 742.0

85 - 893.565 - 691.5

80 - 843.060 - 641.0

75 - 792.5 0 - 590.0

CHEATING POLICY: Any use of unauthorized aids of any form, or obtaining help from another student

during a test is considered cheating. To knowingly provide help to another student during a test

is also considered cheating. The first time any cheating is observed a 0 will be given for that test.

If a second incident occurs, the student(s) involved will receive a 0.0 for the course and a letter

describing the action will be sent to the VP for Student Instructional Support Services.
