ENERGY EXPO CHALLENGE YEAR 6 HOMEWORK TASK WEEKS 2-7 INCLUSIVE

For thousands of years our planet’s given us energy, lots of energy! But in the process, we’ve put our planet under stress and now it needs our help. If we want to keep our planet healthy, we must find better ways of getting and using energy.

OUR YEAR 6 ENERGY EXPOAustralia' largestclean energy event.Join in our fight to save our planet by becoming energy efficient.

E.g.renewable/sustainable/clean energy.

Energy is essential and at times a controversial subject. From a global perspective, there are many challenges with the interdependence on energy sources.

Non-renewable energy sources include gas, oil, goal, and uranium.

Renewable energy sources include solar, wind, geothermal, biomass, hydro, and the ocean.

You will do some initial independent research at home and then work as a group of 3 students in Weeks 8& 9 at school to present your research on a stand at our Year 6 ENERGY EXPO!!

RESEARCH SECTION 1Gather information.

Present on A4 paper with a bibliography.

Where does energy come from?

What are some types of energy?

What can using too much of certain types of energy, like fossil fuels do to our planets energy sources?

How do we use less energy?List ways to be energy efficient at home and at school.

Is nuclear energy considered renewable? Why or why not?

Design an “Be energy efficient at Home “poster with some worthwhile tips to conserve energy on a daily basis.

RESEARCH SECTION 2You will be given one of the following to research with 2 other students.

Present information on the following on Cardboardincludes design ideas forAn Expo Stand on the following Renewable Energy options.HOW YOU WILL PRESENT

YOUR STAND.

WHAT WILL YOU ARE PROMOTING?

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF YOUR ENERGY SOURCE?

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF YOUR RENEWABLE ENERGY SOURCE?

WHAT INFORMATION WILL TO GIVE TO PEOPLE WHO VISIT YOUR STAND?

Energy sources can be replenished (made again) in a short period of time. Sunlight, wind, water, geothermal, and plants are all examples of renewable energy sources.

Solar Energy

The radiant energy of the sun, which can be converted into other forms of energy, such as heat or electricity.Solar cars are a great new idea

Wind Energy

Energy from the movement of wind. Windmills and wind turbines use the force of wind to spin their blades and produce energy

Ocean Energy

Energy that comes from the movement of tides and waves.

GeothermalEnergy iselectricity generated from geothermal energy. Technologies in use include dry steam power plants, flash steam power plants and binary cycle power plants

Biodiesel

A fuel made with vegetable oils, fats, or greases - such as recycled restaurant grease. Biodiesel fuels can be used in diesel engines without changing them. It is the fastest growing alternative fuel in the United States. Biodiesel, a renewable fuel, is safe, biodegradable, and reduces the emissions of most air pollutants.

Biofuels

Fuels made from biomass (plants). These are usually mixed with gasoline and diesel fuel. Some examples are biodiesel and ethanol.

Biomass

Plant materials and animal waste used especially as a source of fuel.

Biomass Energy

A renewable source of energy that is made from plant material and animal waste.

RESEARCH SECTION 3JUNK ENERGY & COCONUT POWER

Design a MACHINE OR APPLIANCE THAT USES AN INTERESTING ALTERNATE POWER SOURCE EG COCONUT POWER, JUNK ENERGY, SOLAR POWER ETC. Label and explain how you propose it works!!!

RESEARCH SECTION 4

Write an explanation text on ways to reduce our Carbon Footprint

Include comments on the measure of how our daily activities affect the environment. Explain how the amount of greenhouse gases we release into the world through burning fossil fuels e.g. driving our cars, heating our homes, and using electricity all contribute to the release of greenhouse gases. Even buying food and clothes affect the amount of greenhouse gases released into the environment. Suggest ways each person can reduce their footprint effectively.

You will then present your project/research on a stand in Weeks 8/9 in the hall. We will invite the school and parents to visit your work.

This is a long term project so you will need to work on a section each week and you will be graded A-E on your stand presentation and research.
