END OF YEAR AP Statistics Activities

OBJECTIVE: To review statistics topics, find use for them in topics that interest you and return something to the Park View High School community.

YOUR TASK: Pick from the following list of activities. Each activity is worth a set number of points. You must complete enough activities to reach 90 points. If you wish, additional activities can be completed for extra credit (maximum 15 points).

DUE DATE: ALL ITEMS DUE BY Friday, May 29th

NO LATE WORK ACCEPTED. Early turn in is very welcome 

REQUIRED TASKS:

  1. Let Someone Know What a Difference They Have Made to You (15 points)

Write a letter to a member of the PVHS staff that has made a real difference to you since you have been at PVHS. If does not have to be a teacher; it could be a counselor, coach, secretary, or ANYBODY who works at the school. I do not have to read the letter. If you would rather that I not read the letter, give it to me in a sealed envelope addressed to that person and I will see that it gets to them. (See me if you want to pick a teacher not a PVHS)

  1. Letter to Next Year’s Students About Statistics (15 points)

Type a letter to next year’s AP Statistics students expressing how your year went, what to expect in the course, and share some advice about what you think it takes to be successful in the class. You may also want to include some advice about preparing for the AP exam. Your letter may be shared with next year’s students. (Must be typed and about 1 page, 1.5 spaced)

OPTIONS TO CHOOSE FROM:

  1. Make Activity/Video to Teach/Reinforce a Concept (30 points)

Create something that can be used next year for students to explain or review a topic in AP Statistics. Suggestions include writing/performing a song, story, game, video, treasure hunt, PowerPoint … be creative! This website has lots of videos to get you thinking.

  1. Careers Using Statistics (30 points)

Investigate different careers using statistics (you must use at least 2 sources). Pick one career of interest to you. Create a poster/collage that illustrates the career and its use of statistics. The poster must include a typed paragraph discussing the career and how statistics is used in the career (site the sources used for your information). Check out this web site for ideas and information:

  1. Examples of Bad Graphs (15 points)

Collect 3 examples from a newspaper or magazine in which a graph has been presented in a potentially deceptive manner. Identify the source from which the graph was taken and explain the ways in which the graph might have been deceptively presented. An original or photocopy of the graphs must be included.

  1. Articles about Statistics (30 points)

Select 3 articles from a newspaper or magazine that discusses a study or experiment that used statistics. This article must be thorough enough so that one can easily identify how it relates to statistics. Write a summary of the article and discuss the statistics that were used. Attach a copy or photocopy of the original article to your summary. (NOT an Internet printout) Include the experimental design (if applicable) and any flaws or omissions you found in the research. The articles must be from March, April, or May 2014. Each summary should be at least 1 page in length.

Format of Project (10 points)

Your submitted project must be submitted in the following format.

  1. Title Page with following information on it
  2. Name, AP Statistics Final Project, Ms. Morgan
  1. Table of Contents
  2. All components of your project must be listed on the table of contents
  3. Every component of your project must be printed out. Nothing will be submitted electronically
