Sirens

February 24th - Annual Drill

*There are 2 sirens year round that are not emergency related.

1) May[d2] 5th - Yom HaShoah (Holocaust Memorial Day) at 10:00am

2) May[d3] 6th - Yom HaAtzmaut (Independence Day) at 20:00

If you hear sirens at any other time, make your way calmly to the private shelter inside a house/apartment building (MAMAD) or group shelter located underground (MIKLAT) nearest to you if safe to do so. If you do not know where your nearest shelter is, go to the nearest school or sports center, as they are equipped with shelters.

What to Do to in an Emergency

In a moving vehicle:

If you are in a car or other moving vehicle during an emergency, leave the vehicle as

quickly as possible and head for the nearest shelter. If there is no shelter nearby, then

lie on the ground and cover your head. Keep as far away as possible from buildings or

glass structures. Make sure you equip your car with an emergency bag[d4].

In a public place or outdoors:

If you are in a public place or outdoors, locate the nearest shelter and get there as quickly

as possible. If you are indoors, in a building without a shelter, then find cover in the stairwell. If you cannot find a public

shelter[d5] or stairwell, then lie on the ground and cover your head.

Keep as far away as possible from buildings or glass structures.

Pointers for Dealing with Children in Times of Stress

Below are a few pointers written by Psychologist Natan Bergman, to help you and your family deal with the stress of the "security room" or "the protected area and some pointers of what to say and how to respond to little children.children. One of the most important things to do is try to keep as much of your normal daily routine whilst remaining vigilant.

1. Make sure you talk to your kids about what to do in the event of a siren – if you're at home or at a friend or in the park.

2. Make it clear that they follow all strategies at all times whilst remaining calm. If you are feeling particularly creative make up or copy a song or mnemonic to help remind you what you have to do when you hear the siren. Kids feel your anxiety, so try to remain as calm as can be.

3. Make sure you have things to help you during the siren, food, water, kids toys, writing and drawing material phone etc..

4. Most importantly - breathe and stay calm (Use abdominal breathing techniques – and use a short concise mantra repeating you are in control and that you are ok).

Remember speak to your kids at their level and keep them informed from you. They are hearing information from conversations, the TV, Radio and their peers, so best is to talk to them and let them hear it from you. You are the one that they trust the most. Don't keep the TV and News on all the time, time; it is not good for them and not good for you.
