1About Elliott
Elliott is on the edge of the Newcastle Waters Station, a cattle station with over 40,000 head. The town began at the site of Number 8 Bore on Newcastle Waters Station as an Australian Army camp during World War II.
It is named after Army Captain R.D (Snow) Elliott MBE. Elliott is the halfway point between Darwin and Alice Springs and is in the Yapurkulangu ward of the Barkly Regional Council. The area is the home of the Jingili people and the traditional name of the town is Kulumindini. There are four language groups and these include Mudburra, Jingili, Wombaya and Warramungu.

In the 2016 Census, there were 339 people in Elliott (NT) (State Suburbs) Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people made up 87.2% of the population.The median age of people in Elliott (NT) (State Suburbs) was 24 years.

1.2Power and water
Electricity is supplied by a gas powered generator. A Diesel generator is used as a backup for power. Chlorinated and fluoridated town water is supplied by bore, and waste water is treated in septic systems on the outskirts of town.

1.4.1Air
Charter flights can be arranged to fly in to Tennant Creek Airport, available for use 24 hours a day or into Elliott’s landing strip. Newcastle Waters also has two airstrips.

The town is located on the Stuart Highway, 253 kilometres north of Tennant Creek.
1.5Local government
The Barkly Regional Council provides local government services in Elliott. Its headquarters is located in Tennant Creek, with a Service Delivery Centre located in Elliott.
1.6Land tenure
Elliott is located within the Gurungu Aboriginal Land Trust and freehold land co-exists with Aboriginal Land under the NT Land Rights Act (NT) 1976.
