Tutoring Week #6

This Week’s Goal: Continue working on affixes. Record newly learned affix words. Create a Christmas or Holiday story which includes words with affixes.

Plan: We will complete three affix activities. Then we will read a Christmas story of Jesse’s choosing and we will write our own Christmas story and use as many affix words as possible.

Action:

  • (What we will do together)
  • My tutee, his mother, and I will review Jesse’s homework, starting by going over the words that Jesse encountered in his weekly reading and did not know or understand. We will write the word and the definition in his tutoring journal and on separate flash cards to add to his word bag.
  • I will introduce the Affix Match activity to Jesse and his mother.
  • (What my tutee will do alone)
  • Affix Match: Jesse will match an affix card to a card that has its meaning. There are 5 sets. Jesse will play this game like memory.
  • (What I must do as a result of my tutee’s action/inaction)
  • When he is finished, we will go over all of the affixes one more time.
  • (What we will do together)
  • Affix Action Game: My tutee, his mother, and I will begin by reading the directions and setting up the game. In this game there are sentence cards and a game board with affix spaces. I will read the sentence to Jesse and he will have to fill in the blank. Jesse will have to say the correct word and affix, if he is correct he will get to move up a space. (Ex. The paint came off the house, so she had to ___ it. (repaint)
  • (What I must do as a result of my tutee’s action/inaction)
  • I will keep all cards that Jesse does not answer correctly. We will go over these again to see if he can think of the answer a second time or if he really needs more explicit instruction regarding a certain affix or vocabulary term.
  • (What we will do together)
  • Build A Word: Jesse, his mother, and I will move on to our third and final game. In this game there is a base word and blanks on either side of the word, where a prefix and suffix can be added. Using affix cards we will build new words, by adding them to the root words. I will help Jesse explore multiple combinations and possibilities with these affixes.
  • (What my tutee will do alone)
  • Build A Word: Jess will record at least five of the new words in his Tutoring Journal Notebook on a new page.
  • (What we will do together)
  • Finally we will read a Christmas book together. I will bring some options for Jesse, but we can choose one from the library if he prefers. Jesse will read aloud the story to his mother and me. While reading, Jesse and I will point out words with affixes, which connect to our previous activities.
  • Afterwards, we will end our tutoring session by writing a Christmas or Holiday story (I know that he celebrates this holiday). Jesse will create and compose the story. I will help Jesse create this story and add affix words into it. Jesse will then read his story or memory to his mother. Jesse can translate it in Spanish for her.

  • Barnes and Noble Book Buy is next week. I will remind Jesse to start thinking about books that he would like to purchase next week!
