1.2 The approach utilized to locate the global minima
In an attempt to locate the global minima, the Fe(III)PPX (free heme) was first optimized at a lower level of theory, RI-BP86/def2-SV(P). Then three models of each complex, obtained by appending the ligand (L1 or L2) on Fe(III)PPX in three different orientations as shown in the diagram below, were pre-optimized at RI-BP86/def2-SV(P). It is worth noting that in the diagram, the arrow head points in the direction of the terminal NH2 group of the thiosemicarbazone moiety of each ligand. Since the Fe(III)PPX molecule is somewhat symmetrical, several other orientations of the ligand will result in structures similar to those obtained from the orientations considered.
After pre-optimization, we selected the most stable of the three models (i.e., the model with the lowest energy) for further optimization at RI-BP86-D3(BJ)/def2-SVP /[def2-TZVP for Fe(III)] level. For each complex, the most stable model was that obtained from orientation (1) of the ligand. In this model, a hydrogen bond was formed between one propionate side chain of Fe(III)PPIX and the thiosemicarbazone moiety of each ligand. This hydrogen bond interaction is probably the main feature that accounts for the model’s extra stability.

MOLDEN input files generated by ORCA 3.0.3(using the utility:orca_2mkl BaseName -molden)were standardized,and then standard WFN files appropriate forthe AIMAll and Multiwfn programswere generated by the molden2aim utility.All MOLDEN input files used here were generated from GBW files obtained from the single-point calculations described in section 1.1.5above.
