EIGHTMILE RIVER WILD AND SCENIC OUTREACH AND EDUCATION:

Community Small Grant Program

What: The Outreach and Education Subcommittee of the Eightmile River Wild and Scenic Coordinating Committee (ERWSCC) seeks to promote education about and direct community experience with the Eightmile River through a programof small grants. Grants will be awarded to entities which educate or provide outreach to local citizens – especially youth - about watershed resources.

Amounts Available: Amounts will generally range from $50 to $300 and up to $500 if funding is available.

Who Can Apply: Non-profit organizations such as land trusts, community agencies such as youth and family services, libraries, schools, civic organizations and citizen groups based in the watershed towns of Lyme, Salem, East Haddam, Colchester and East Lyme.

Why: ERWSCC wants people to connect with their river. The Eightmile River is a nationally recognized environmental treasure and resource, offering recreational and educational opportunitiesto all who visit its watershed. A portion of the funding received by ERWSCC from the National Park Service is intended for small grants to benefit the community.

Examples: Local field trips to learn about natural resources; programs and outreach about water quality, plant life, invasive species, wildlife, geologyor watershed ecology; programs using ERWSCC’sEnviroscape (an interactive 3D watershed model); projects that emphasize the history or recreational potential of the Eightmile River Watershed; and outreach that teaches or demonstrates how to be a better watershed citizen.

When to Apply: There will be a “rolling deadline.” Requests will be acted upon as they are received. Please allow 60 days between the time of the application and the program for which you seek funding.
