CODE OF CONDUCT FOR STUDENTS

1.PREAMBLE

The code of conduct is aimed at establishing a disciplined and purposeful college environment dedicated to the improvement and maintenance of the quality of the learning process. Every student is therefore expected to adhere to it.

Every student at a public college is subject to a code of conduct, disciplinary measures and procedures as per the provision of FET Colleges Act No. 16 of 2006.The code of conduct is in line with the dictates of the Constitution of SA.The code of conduct is also in place to instill proper behavior by students towards students, lecturers, facilitators, support staff, campus management, the SRC and the community with the aim of ensuring that the good image of the college is maintained.

2. DEFINITIONS

2.1. Student means a registered student as defined in the FETC Act no. 16 of 2006.

2.2. Residence means the accommodation of students provided by the College.

2.3. Community means people work, visit or study at the College.

2.4. Offence means violation or breach of the Code of Conduct or College laws.

2.5. Sanction means the penalty for contravention of the Code of Conduct or College laws.

2.6. SAPS means the South African Police Service

2.7. College refers to Ehlanzeni FET College

3. CONDUCT: THE STUDENT TOWARDS ACADEMIC MATTERS

3.1 Students must attend class as stipulated on the time table provided by campus management.

3.2 If absent, the student must provide a sick note from a doctor or a written explanation signed by his/her parent or guardian as soon as student is back.

3.3 Astudent who is absent from a test, examination or other assessment must present a sick note or any other authentic proof.

3.1All students must establish sound study ethics to ensure academic and practical progress by:

3.1.1Preparing well for tests, internal examinations, national examinations and assessments.

3.1.2Doing tasks assigned by lecturers without copying from other students.

3.1.3Submitting assignments, class work, homework, business plans and projects on time as prescribed by the relevant lecturer.

3.2Students should participate in approved activities arranged by college management, lecturing staff and SRC.

3.3Students must always be dressed neatly in a manner appropriate to the image of the college. Provocative clothing is not permitted.

3.4In order to maintain an environment pleasant and conducive to education, students may not litter.

3.5The students must create a learning environment conducive to lecturing, facilitating and learning by:

3.5.1Not bunking classes.

3.5.2Not gathering in corridors, on stairs or in the parking areas thereby causing a disturbance to lecturing activities.

3.5.3Being on time as prescribed by the timetable provided by campus management.

3.5.4Being in possession of textbooks, notebooks and any other equipment prescribed by lecturing staff.

3.6No physical violence is permitted towards other students, any member of staff or visitors to the campus.

3.7Students may not put up posters or other forms of advertisement on campus unless these are approved, stamped and/ or signed by management.

3.8If a student absent him/ herself or be late for at least three times and not providing a valid proof/ reason he/ she shall appear before a disciplinary hearing.

3.9All students are expected to attend 100% of their classes, but minimum attendance should be 80%. is an offence.

3.10Students are not allowed to leave workshops or classes while they are still in session without permission.

3.11Cellphones must be switched off during classes/ workshops.

3.12No student shall do his/ her activities during learning sessions.

3.13All classroom rules must be adhered to.

4CONDUCT: THE STUDENT TOWARDS THE EDUCATOR

4.1Respect lecturers, facilitators or any other co-ordinators assigned to the learning programmes of the College.

4.2Be attentive, participative in class activities and honour instructions from lecturers, facilitators and any coordinators assigned to the learning programmes of the College.

4.3Avoid being disruptive in class by ways of talking, moving around, cellphone use, eating or drinking, irresponsible use of equipment provided, doing work assigned for another subject or disrespectful remarks to lecturers or any co-ordinator.

5CONDUCT:THE STUDENT TOWARDS FELLOW STUDENT

5.1No unfair discrimination against any student on account of race, gender, ethnic or social origin, colour, sexual persuasion, culture, language, HIV and AIDS status, religion or political affiliation.

5.2Avoid name-calling, insults or offensive jokes.

5.3Avoid physical or sexual abuse such as close contact, inappropriate touching or any form of harassment.

5.4No stealing of student property will be tolerated.

5.5No assault or fighting is allowed in campuses.

6CONDUCT: THE STUDENT AND COMMUNITY

Students must assist to promote the image of the college in the community by:

6.1Marketing the mission, vision and values of the college to the community in a manner that will not jeopardise either party.

6.2 Promoting the programmes offered in the different departments of the College.

6.3Conducting themselves in a proper and acceptable manner at all times.

6.4Displaying good manners to all community members.

6.5Being polite and helpful to all visitors to the campus.

7CONDUCT: STUDENT AT RESIDENCE

7.1 All students residing at College residence shall abide to the stipulated time of locking the residence.

7.2 No student shall be allowed entry after the locking of the residence.

7.3 Student may not participate or encourage others to participate in immoral activities e.g. prostitution.

6.4 No alcohol or drugs allowed in the residences.

6.5 No student shall conduct business of any kind without campus management approval

6.6 All visits to the residences must be authorised.

7. CONDUCT: THE STUDENT AND JUSTICE SYSTEM

7.1 The students may not be involved in any activities which are detrimental to their lives or to the college.

7.2 Students may not be involved in any criminal activities within the College premises or in the Community.

7.3 College is obliged to report to the Police any criminal activities taking place within its premises.

8. Disciplinary Process

8.1 The College must subject any student who is accused of committing acts that are classified as offences and crimes to a disciplinary process in terms of the Disciplinary procedures for Students.

9. CLASIFICATION OF OFFENCES AND SANCTIONS

9.1 Classification of offences and sanctions will be dealt with in disciplinary procedures policy.
