AdvanceSC

Educational Programs Funding Application

Background

Economic conditions in South Carolina have created funding challenges for the high school, technical college and university systems in their efforts to be effectively positioned as key assets and leveraging tools in the state’s economic development efforts. The South Carolina Competitiveness Initiative identified the overall quality of K-12 educational programs and the lack of a top-tier research university as major obstacles to the state’s growth and development. The South Carolina Governor’s 2001 work force survey cites 61 percent of businesses unable to find an adequately skilled labor force. South Carolina currently ranks 41st in high school graduation rates and 36th in college graduation rates. AdvanceSC’s education programs, geared toward supporting manufacturing and related industry, can help address some of this funding gap. AdvanceSC awards grants to support education programs related to manufacturing-based economic development efforts in Duke Energy’s South Carolina service area. Specific programs eligible for support are:

• Technical college training programs that prepare the work force to support new and existing manufacturing (Grant award may not exceed $250,000 per request);

• College and university research/higher education programs that provide innovative solutions and competitive advantages for manufacturing and related industry (Grant award may not exceed $100,000 per request);

• High school education program grant awards for the 2013 annual grant cycle will not exceed $15,000 per request. Grant requests may be limited to one application per school district, so please submit for your priority project only. Also, progress reports on previous grants should be up-to-date in order for the current request to be considered.
