EDUCATIONAL GRANTS FOR INDIVIDUALS– Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Burford School Educational Grants Scheme?

The Burford School Foundation (BSF) is limited by its Trust Deed, which allows financial support to be offered for:

Promoting the education (including social and physical training) of persons under the age of 25 years who are either resident in the area of benefit (the parishes of Burford, Fulbrook, Taynton, Swinbrook with Widford, and Asthall) or who have at any time attended as a pupil any educational establishment in the area of benefit for not less than 2 consecutive years and who are in need of financial assistance …e.g.

providing financial assistance, outfits, clothing, instruments, tools or books to assist such persons to pursue their education (including the study of music and other arts), to undertake travel in the furtherance thereof, or to prepare for or enter a profession, trade, occupation or service on leaving school, university, or other educational establishment.

  1. Am I eligible to apply for an Educational Grant?

If you are under 25 live in one of the parishes named above, or you have attended a school in the area of benefit for two consecutive years, and are in need of help with an educational matter, you are eligible to apply for a grant. Applications for students under the age of 15 may be made by their parents/carers.

  1. What are the priorities for Burford School Foundation in making educational grants?

The BSF Trustees wish to focus on students who need financial help to meet extra costs that cannot be met from other sources of support. The Education Grant Scheme is for one-off expenses which cannot be covered from other sources of income.

The Trustees will consider supporting a wide range of needs, for example:

  • costs related to field trips and other mandatory trips and visits
  • the cost of purchasing set texts
  • costs of essential specialist equipment and the insurance of that equipment, e.g. musical instrument purchase, specialist laboratory kit
  • Emergencies and unanticipated expenditure e.g. replacement of un-reparable or stolen essential educational equipment

The Trust does not fund phones or i-pods.

  1. When should I apply?

You should apply when you become aware of the need for financial help. Decisions will be made in January, May, July and October. Forms should be submitted in the month before each meeting.

  1. When do I hear what decision has been made?

All applications will be acknowledged on receipt by the Grants Committee Chair. That acknowledgement will indicate when the next Trustee meeting is scheduled. The BSF Chairman will contact you once a decision has been made by the Trustees.

  1. What evidence is needed to support an Educational Grant application?

Applicants/parents/carers should use the form to explain clearly what their particular financial need is. Evidence should be related to that need, e.g. costs of books, insurance quotations for essential equipment, a letter on headed paper from school, university or other educational establishment detailing the costs of a trip.

Please explain whether you have asked for financial help from any other charity of grant-giving organisation, and how you have raised funds yourself. You should explain why help is needed e.g. low family income (for which evidence could be eligibility for free school meals), being a young person living in foster or local authority care, or homeless, or being a University student with student loan arrangements in place.

Trustees may contact your referee(from school, university or other educational establishment) as part of their decision-making process.

How will Educational Grant be paid?

BSF will not make payments to the parents/carers of applicants, and will instead make a direct payment to the supplier of the goods or services (e.g. directly to the School/University, or specialist supplier). BSF will pay applicants direct, where possible using pre-paid vouchers e.g. book tokens, where direct payment to suppliers is not possible.

The Trust uses electronic banking, and all applicants are asked to provide their account details.

  1. What information does BSF need about my use of the Grant?

BSF requires applicants to provide evidence that the grant has been spenton the items for which it was requested e.g. copies of receipts for musical instrument purchase, laptop purchase, train tickets, book purchase, specialist clothing and equipment purchase.

  1. What if I change my mind and what to use the grant for something else?

Applicants/Parents/Carers should contact the Grants Committee Chair to discuss the situation.

  1. What if, as a University/College Student, I leave before I have completed my course?

Applicants should contact the Grants Committee Chair to discuss the situation.

  1. What if my financial need is for longer-term help?

If you need financial help over a prolonged period, please contact the Grants Committee Chairman, forinformation about the Burford School Foundation Bursary Fund.
