Education Justice Project

Spring 2018 Associate Community Librarian Application

Due October 2, 2017

To Holly Clingan:

The mission of the Education Justice project is to build a model college-in-prison program that demonstrates the positive impacts of higher education upon incarcerated people, the communities from which they come, the host institution, and society as a whole.

Thank you for your interest in the Education Justice Project and our Community Library! Our Community Library seeks to provide an exemplar hybrid “community space-academic library” for college-in-prison programs. The main responsibility of our Associate Community Librarians will be to provide guidance and training for our on-site team of incarcerated student Community Library Workers at Danville Correctional Center. These EJP students have responsibility for maintaining the library spaces, cataloguing our collection, developing policy, and the design and operations of the Community Library spaces. Additional responsibilities of the Associate Community Librarians include efficient delivery of appropriate resources and book requests from UIUC campus libraries to Danville Correctional Center in consultation with the program coordinators, the Director of Academic Programs, EJP instructors, and EJP students.

Comfort and familiarity with library procedures is not required but previous experience is extremely helpful. Please be aware that our main criteria for involvement are a seriousness of purpose and maturity. The Associate Community Librarians will support EJP’s faculty and respond to evolving needs and demands and remain in compliance with all procedures and protocols of Danville Correctional Center and the Education Justice Project.

This position is unpaid. Volunteers must have a Bachelor’s degree to participate in any of the EJP programs that involve contact with incarcerated students, but undergraduates are welcome to support the program in other ways, especially through the Prison Justice Project. http://www.educationjustice.net/home/programs/prison-justice-project/

To apply, please send a cover letter, CV/or resume, and two professional references to Holly Clingan, EJP Community Librarian by Sunday October 1, 2017 at: . The letter should address your reasons for applying with EJP, your reflections about working in a prison (including any apprehensions or concerns you might have about it), and anything else you want us to know about your suitability for this work.

Thank you for your interest in working with the Education Justice Project!
