EDIROL R-O9 AUDIO RECORDER

The Edirol R-09 is a handheld digital audio recorder with a built-in stereo condenser microphone. The R-09 can record WAV files at 24bits, a higher definition than most portable field recorders and uses 2.0 gigabyte SD memory cards. This makes it useful for capturing and importing high-quality audio recordings, which can be easily imported into a professional-grade audio, video or multi-media project on a PC or Mac. You can also use the R-09 for recording interviews, conferences, speeches, and notes.

POWERING UP

  1. Press and hold the POWER button on the left side of the unit.
  2. If nothing happens, open the battery compartment on the bottom of the unit by holding the lock switch to the left and sliding the door all the way off of the unit.
  3. Pop open the inner battery door and swing it outward to reveal the battery compartment. Make sure there are two AA batteries inserted according to the diagram inside the inner battery door. Take note of whether you are using Alkaline or Ni-MH batteries, because you must select the proper battery type in the POWER menu once you turn the unit on.

RECORDING

  1. On the back of the R-09, there is a switch marked AGC. This stands for Automatic Gain Control, a feature that will regulate the volume of your recordings so that the quietest parts are louder and loudest parts are quieter. AGC is useful when you are recording multiple sound sources at once, speakers in a meeting. You will want to turn it off when you are recording a single source, like when you are interviewing one person.
  2. Below AGC is a switch for LOW CUT. This filters out the low-end frequencies and is handy for recording a “boomy” voice. Leave it off if you don’t need it.
  3. If you are connecting an external microphone to the R-09, you can select MONO or STEREO options on the EXT MIC TYPE switch. To check recording levels, press REC once to engage STANDBY mode. Speak into the unit to test the sound level. If you are recording something at close range, set the MIC GAIN control (on the back of the unit) to LOW. If you are recording something quieter or further away, set it to HIGH.
  4. Once the MIC GAIN is set, you can adjust the level with the INPUT LEVEL buttons on the left side of the unit. If the level is too high, the PEAK indicator will light up. Keep adjusting the INPUT LEVEL until it is loud and clear but not distorted.
  5. Press REC again to begin recording.
  6. Press STOP when you are done.

PLAYBACK

  1. Plug headphones into the headphone jack on the right side of the unit. The R-09 doesn’t have internal speakers, so you must use headphones to listen to what you recorded. You can adjust the headphone level with the VOLUME buttons below the headphone jack.
  2. You can add reverb to your track by pressing the REVERB button. Keep pressing it to scroll through all four kinds of reverb or to turn the reverb off.
  3. Hold down the Fast-Forward and Rewind buttons to navigate within a track. Press them once to skip to the next track or the previous track.

MENU OPTIONS

  1. To access menu options, hold down the FINDER/MENU button. Use the UP and DOWN arrow buttons to navigate the menus and use the REC button to select. You can use the left arrow or the FINDER/MENU button to exit the menu you are viewing.

EXPORTING

  1. To export audio files to your computer, slide off the battery cover on the bottom of the unit and you will see the USB 2.0 port.
  2. Once you connect the R-09 to your computer, you can use most audio or video editing programs to import or export files. Windows Media Player and iTunes both work well for playback. Garage Band, Pro Tools, and other common recording programs are good for editing your files.
