Travel Directions to Fernworthy from the North
At Exeter take the A30 west towards Okehampton and Cornwall. After 27km or so, turn off at Whiddon Down on the A382 to Moretonhampstead. After 5km turn right into Chagford. At the T junction in the centre of Chagford, turn right following a permanent brown sign to GidleighPark. Shortly, at a left fork, a permanent brown sign points to Fernworthy Reservoir, and there are two further brown signs to the reservoir.
Once entering the forest please drive with extra care - on Day 1, people will be walking to the start along the road, and on Day 2 competitors will be crossing the road in several places. (At least one point will be manned for juniors crossing).
The public road continues, past a car park on the right, round the southern side of the reservoir to a turning circle at the end of the road at SX 659839. The postcode is TQ13 8EA.Weather permitting, cars will park in the field beyond which is also the Assembly area.
As the roads are narrow, it will be helpful if no cars leave before 1400 on Day 1.
Parking. Parking for larger campervans/minibuses over 2.2m will park next to the forestry hut and on the grass opposite 700m before the car park entrance (this en route to the Red start on Day 1. Also, in the event of heavy rain prior to the event, emergency parking may be on forest roads within the competition area - take extra care for competitors running along or crossing roads. All areas adjacent to the forest roads will be OOB until start times.
Safety: Competitors travelling alone may wish to hand in car keys at Enquiries. All competitors run at their own risk and are responsible for their own safety. A whistle is advisable. Cagoules may be compulsory if the weather is severe.
In case of disorientation, the safety bearing is east, with some north or south depending on which part of the forest is in use.
Cancellation: In the event of cancellation, the organising club reserves the right to retain all or part of the entry fees to defray expenses incurred.
Entry Errors: Please check your competitor information. In case of error please revisit Fabian4 or contact Graham Dugdale by email at before 9pm.

The Map
The mapped area is based on the original1979 map by Brian Parker and Erik Peckett.During the last two years a full revision has been made by Rod Postlethwaite of WRE and Tom Lillicrap of DEVON using a Lidar base.
All courses will be at 1:10,000.
The maps for both days,on waterproof paper, will be A3 or A4, depending on the lengths of courses – see above. Control descriptions will be on the front or back as space allows. There will be no legend on the map except for special symbols. A legendwill be on display at Enquiries.
In consultation with the Dartmoor National Park Authority and SW Lakes, the placing of control siteson significant historicaland bio-sensitive sites has been avoided.
Mapping notes for competitors – Tom Lillicrap
General points: Boulder size is shown relative to the area around, so for example in heavily bouldered areas, only the most significant are shown.
Contrary to previous advice, a distinctive vegetation boundary is represented by the traditional line of black dots.
There are 2 non IOF symbols which are also the same on the control descriptions:
Black cross – Hide
Black circle - Hut circle
Hut circles appear on the ground variously from clear old walls to minor bumps in the ground. They especially disappear in bracken!
Course Notes - Mike Wimpenny
The area is a working coniferous forest of varying age on hillsides sloping down to the reservoir which are split by major valleys. There are a number of significant clearings which have mainly been created to protect ancient hut circles from forestry operations. There is only a little bramble and bracken but recent gales have created some wind-blow which is mapped where significant to route choice. There have also been some recent thinning operations that have created variable amount of brashings and also some deep vehicle ruts. Some of the thicker forest can only be navigated around using tracks, paths etc but in most cases there will be at least 2 viable route choices.
Because of a lack of paths in the right places, juniors (Yellow/White courses) will also have to follow large earth banks on some legs. Some other legs will be taped or marked by Smiley Faces.
Prizegiving Ceremonies
On Day 1 there will be a prize-giving ceremony at 1630, or as soon after as is possible, for presentations of certificatesto the South-West Champions, ie all age-class winners. There will also be a presentation to the winning club in the SWOA Relay series.
On Day 2 there will be a prize-giving ceremony at 1330, or as soon after as is possible, for the presentation of the Caddihoe Chase Trophies, based on the combined results for both days.
SWOA 50th Anniversary Buffet
This is taking place in the Jubilee Village Hall, Chagford on Saturday evening.
The hall will be open from 1900 for 1930. Further details on the SWOA website.
