Wakeboard mania: Letter from Performance Ski & Surf ordering more equipment

Your boss is amazed. Bill Porter, owner of Performance Ski and Surf, hasn’t seen sporting equipment sell this rapidly in Orlando, Florida, since in-line skating became popular. But since May, you haven’t been able to keep wakeboards in stock. It doesn’t seem to matter much which brand--Wake Tech, Neptune, or Full Tilt--your customers are snapping them up and are heading out to the water, locals and tourists alike. They’re outselling traditional trick water skis by 20 to 1.

“Maybe it’s because they don’t require big, fast boats,” you suggest. “I heard they’re using fishing trawlers out in Seattle, and they’re still catching wind because the slower boats make bigger wakes to launch from.”

Porter nods thoughtfully as he gazes at a photograph of professional wakeboarder Dean Lavelle at nearby LakeButler. He’s holding the same kind of rope and water skier holds, but he’s 15 feet in the air. His short, stubby, fiberglass wakeboard (which is strapped to his feet) is higher than his head, and from the grimace on his face, it looks like he’s mid-flip.

“I just hope none of these kids get hurt trying to imitate the pros,” Porter says.

“Nah,” you say, “Extreme sports---it’s the way of the twenty-first century. Look at what happened to snowboarding. You’ll see wakeboarders at the Olympics soon.”

Your task: Porter has asked you, the assistant manager, to draft a letter for his signature to order another 12 Wake Techs, retail $239.95 each (hot-kiss pink); 8 Neptunes, retail $349.95 each(astrocoral blue); and 10 Full Tilts, retail 424.95 each(skypassion purple) from Aquatic Sports Supply, 2321 South Shore Blvd., San Diego, California. Ask for credit terms of 2/10 net 30 and request expedited handling and express ground shipping (add 7.5% to your cost). Your markup on retail is 37 percent (multiply 63 percent times retail to arrive at your cost); use this in your calculation of what your bill should amount to. Display your order clearly and correctly in an easy to read professional-looking table. Be sure to show subtotals and total cost of your order below the table. Your account number is B223305
