CBSM Terms & Conditions 2016/2017

  1. Students must have adequate opportunity for practice at home as continuation of individual lessons and/or membership of group activities are on the basis of satisfactory progress which will be monitored by teachers in consultation with the Head of Department and Head of Music Service.
  1. Students must attend all CBSM lessons and group activities for which they have been enrolled as directed by the relevant Head of Department. Group activities are an important development of general musicianship skills and an extension of technical work introduced in lessons. Non-attendance may result in lessons and/or group membership being discontinued and instrument withdrawal.
  1. Students must notify the City of Belfast School of Music as soon as possible if they are unable to attend any lesson, rehearsal, recital or concert due to illness either by email

or by telephone 02890784200. We ask for common courtesy so that teaching staff may be informed of an absence, please try to give as much notice as possible.

  1. Fees must be paid in full or a standing order set up by Monday 3rd October 2016. All students are accepted on the basis of a full academic year and if a student has to withdraw in the course of the year, written notice must be given to the Head of Music Service. The student will be charged for 6 weeks from the receipt of written notification in addition to the number of weeks attended and his/her account amended as necessary.
  1. Students who have attained Grade 6 standard and above are encouraged to buy their own instrument. For details of the Assisted Instrument Purchase Scheme (AIPS), please contact the Head of Music Service.
  1. Students will be held responsible for costs of replacing lost items or repairing CBSM instruments if such loss or damage (beyond “fair wear and tear”) is due to carelessness or negligence. Please note that adequate personnel insurance against damage or loss is essential.
  1. Students are expected to act sensibly and responsibly towards their peers, staff and the building at all times when attending lessons and group activity rehearsals in the Fortwilliam Centre or Fane Street Primary. This guideline also relates to any off-site residential course or concert tour.
  1. Parents must inform the Head of Music Service, in confidence if preferred, of any health issues, dietary needs, significant allergies, prescribed medication etc., which might be in their child’s best interests In order that the CBSM staff are able to provide an appropriate pastoral response to any emergency situation it is important that parents and young people share such information with us. If in doubt, and if a young person appears to be at risk, staff will use the 999 emergency telephone numbers to call the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service.
  1. Concert Dress-Students are expected to dressappropriately for Concerts. Students will receive guidance from the conductor of the Orchestra or Band. It is important that girls wear knee length or ballet length skirts, female cellists should wear trousers. Shoes for male and female should be black and boys should wear black socks.
