Welcome to Accelerated Math I! Below, you will find some helpful guidelines to ensure success this school year!

Units of Study

During the First Nine-week period, we will study the following concepts:

MA1A1.Explore and interpret the characteristics of functions, using graphs, tables, and simple algebraic techniques.

  1. Represent functions using function notation.
  2. Graph the basic functions where n = 1 to 3, , , and .
  1. Graph transformations of basic functions including vertical shifts, stretches, and shrinks, as well as reflections across the x- and y-axes.

d. Investigate and explain the characteristics of a function: domain, range, zeros, intercepts, intervals of increase and decrease, maximum and minimum values, and end behavior.

e. Relate to a given context the characteristics of a function, and use graphs and tables to investigate its behavior.

MA1G2. Students will understand and use the language of mathematical argument and justification.

a. Use conjecture, inductive reasoning, deductive reasoning, counterexamples, and indirect proof as appropriate.

b. Understand and use the relationships among a statement and its converse, inverse, and contrapositive.

MA1A1. Students will explore and interpret the characteristics of functions, using graphs, tables, and simple algebraic techniques.

f. Recognize sequences as functions with domains that are whole numbers.

g. Explore rates of change, comparing constant rates of change (i.e. slope) versus variable rates of change. Compare rates of change of linear, quadratic, square root, and other function families.

  1. Determine graphically and algebraically whether a function has symmetry and whether it is even, odd, or neither.

Class Materials

Always have the following materials with you in class:

-Pencil-I prefer that you use a pencil for all math work

-Cooper required notebook

-spiral notebook/composition book for warm-ups

-agenda

- Notebook

-scientific calculator

-compass

-protractor

-Quarter-inch or centimeter graph paper

-colored pencils and/or fine line markers

Grades

Your grade in this class will be determined in the following manner:

-Tests/Projects 35%

-Homework 10%

-Class work25%

-Quizzes30%

Warm-ups

When you enter class a warm-up problem will be displayed on the white board. Warm-ups should be recorded in a spiral notebook or composition book and kept in the classroom for daily use.

Each Friday, a mini-quiz will be given to assess students’ understanding of the concepts covered in the warm-ups. If you are absent on quiz day, you will take mini-quiz when you return.

Homework

Homework is assigned almost every night. Homework gives you an opportunity to practice the concepts we discuss in class. The old saying “Practice makes perfect” is true—the more you practice math, the better you will become. I will not accept late homework assignments unless you have a valid reason documented by a phone call, email, or note from your parent/guardian.

Makeup Work

CobbCounty policy allows a student 1 day per day absent to make up work. This policy applies to excused absences.

Textbooks

Students are assigned two textbooks and are responsible for replacement costs of $68.00 eachif a book is lost. You will be issued workbooks and may write in those and keep them, but if they are lost, the cost of replacement is $11.00 each.

Class Rules

Be on time.

Be prepared.

Be on task.

Be RESPECTFUL.

Speak only at appropriate times (hand raised—wait to be acknowledged during whole class instruction. You may talk freely when working collaboratively in group, but please remember to keep you voice low so that you will not disturb other groups.)

Other Expectations

I would prefer that math work be done in pencil!

Chewing gum, food, and drinks (other than water) will not be allowed.

Work must be shown to receive credit.

Notebook organization must be maintained daily.

Stay in your seat during group instruction time.

Check my blog frequently for important information about this course

Please sign and return acknowledging that you have read and understand the syllabus for the First Nine Weeks.
