Drama Ideas for SEAL Planning

Year: R / Theme: Going for Goals

Games (can be used as part of a lesson or at other times during the week)

  • Keeper of the Keys

Children sit in a circle. One child sits in the middle, blindfolded, with keys close by. Choose a child to try to get the keys. They must try to get the keys and leave the circle without being heard. If the keeper hears them, they should point at where they think they are. If they miss, they can carry on. If they are correct, person must put the keys down and choose another person to continue. Continue until keys are out of the circle.

  • Pass the Clap

Sit in a circle. Pass the clap around by turning to the person next to you and clapping once at them. Try in both directions and aim to be as quick as possible.

  • Count to 10

Children sit in a circle. The aim is to count to 10! Only one person can speak at a time and can only say one number. If more than one person speaks, start again at 0!

  • Pass the Tambourine

Ask a child to sit in the centre of the circle with his eyes closed while the rest of the group sit with their hands behind their backs. Then pass a tambourine around the circle, behind their backs, as quietly as possible. When you call ‘stop’ the child in the middle opens their eyes and points to they think is holding the tambourine. Discuss how they knew who it was – talk about body and facial expressions.

Activities (linked to planned lessons)

Knowing Myself

Introduce selves by saying name and doing an action – everybody else copy. Emphasise how different people did different things. Move around the classroom to something they like doing, something they don’t like – did everyone choose the same – why/why not?

Mime/act some of the things people chose to like and dislike – get children to focus on clear actions – can others tell what they are doing?

Each child choose one thing they like doing and one they dislike. Take photos of them doing this and begin to make own book that shows photo with a caption.

My Goal Is ……

Recap the things they liked and disliked last time. Move around the classroom to find something they would like to get better at. Think about a specific learning area – eg. PE. Is there something they would like to be able to do? Continue book by taking photos and adding captions. Make a whole class poster so everybody can see what the goals are and help them to see that they might be able to help each other. (Ensure all adults have a goal too).

Keeping Going

Recap goals on poster – all mime them together. How are people getting on? Is it easy or hard? What will help them to achieve their goals? Narrate a ‘story’ to the children about someone trying to reach their goal using the children’s ideas – everyone mime them as you tell it.

Complete own books by taking photos and adding captions of ways to achieve the goal.

Do a Circle of Testimony, imagining someone who has reached a goal. In pairs say how they feel – eg. “I am happy”, “I am proud”. Make a list of the words used to display near their goals poster.

*Keep reviewing the books – tick off on the poster and ensure everyone is helping each other.
