JOB DESCRIPTION

Title of Post: Senior Lecturer in English Literature

Grade:Single Pay Spine Grade 8

Responsible to: Academic Coordinatorfor English Literature

MAIN PURPOSE OF THE JOB

To undertake a range of research, teaching and other duties as a member of the team for English Literature, but making contributions to other areas of the School and institution’s portfolio and academic activities as appropriate.

KEY TASKS

  1. To undertake a high level of research, publication and scholarship in a relevant discipline or disciplines.
  1. The engage in research-income generation and externally funded projects, including the establishment of internal and external collaborative work.
  1. To facilitate the development of team and wider School research activity.
  1. To contribute to the delivery of taught and research programmes, including the supervision of doctoral and other students.
  1. To assist the Academic Coordinator by contributing to the design, development and administration of academic programmes, including the preparation of documentation and management of designated modules.
  1. To participate in the supervision and assessment of students, ensuring that appropriate assignments and examinations are set and marked in accordance with validated programme documents and University assessment policies.
  1. To monitor student progression and achievement.
  1. To provide appropriate support and advice to students.
  1. To participate in the promotion of programmes and the recruitment, selection and admission of students.
  1. To contribute to the work of other teams as appropriate within overall workload.
  1. To contribute to the processes of annual monitoring, periodic review and inspection at a programme and University level.
  1. To participate in external activities through membership of subject and professional associations and networks, and undertake liaison work with other institutions and organisations.
  1. To participate in the wider academic and professional life of the University through membership of committees, working groups and examination boards and through attendance at other events.
  1. To facilitate or participate in appropriate training and staff development activities, including acting as mentor.
  1. To undertake any other duties that may reasonably be required.

PERFORMANCE MONITORING AND REVIEW

16.To agree objectives and targets with the Line Managerin accordance with University priorities and to participate in the staff appraisal process.

17.To provide written reports on activity as requested.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

SENIOR LECTURER IN ENGLISH LITERATURE

Core / Supplementary
Education/Qualifications and Special Training / A PhD in English Literature. / A teaching qualification in HE
Knowledge and Skills / Specialist knowledge in English Literature as an academic discipline.
A record of publication at an appropriate level (including outputs of an internationally excellent standard).
Specialist knowledge sufficient to support and deliver teaching and supervision across the wider subject area of historical studies.
Excellent planning, teaching and assessment skills.
Good IT skills.
Experience / A record of research or research-related income generation, or participation in externally funded projects.
A record of doctoral completion.
Successful teaching and supervision experience in the UK higher education sector.
Successful module and programme development experience.
Personality Requirements / Ability to facilitate staff development activity, and to provide mentoring support.
Ability to work as part of a team and in collaborative activities.
Well-developed networking abilities.
Willing to work flexibly including some weekends.
Innovative, practical, problem solving approach.
