2 / Unlock & Rename
Background Layer / You have just opened an image file in Photoshop.
By default, Photoshop places the image on a layer called Background. The Background is currently locked (note the lock icon next to the layer name) which may prevent SOME operations. You will unlock the layer by following these next steps:
a. Double-click Background layer
b. Rename Layer: “Original”
NOTE: the lock no longer appears near layer name.
3 / Duplicate Original Image / NOTE: There are 4 ways to Duplicate Layers:
In all cases, ensure the “Original” layer is selected
1. MENU BAR
a. Menu Bar > Layer > Duplicate Layer…
b. Rename Layer > As: > “Retouched”
c. Click OK
2. LAYER OPTIONS BUTTON
a. Go To Layers Panel
b. Click Layer Options Button
c. Rename Layer > As: > “Retouched”
d. Click OK
3. CONTROL-CLICK MOUSE
a. Go To Layers Panel
b. Select Original layer and Control-Click
c. Rename Layer > As: > “Retouched”
d. Click OK
4. DRAG ORIGINAL LAYER TO NEW LAYER ICON
a. Go To Layers Panel
b. Select Original layer and Drag Down To
c. Place cursor over “Original copy”
d. Double-Click “Original copy”
e. Type “Retouched”
f. Hit Enter (Win) or Return (Mac)
4 / Fix wrinkles or small blemishes with Spot Healing Tool
/ a. Select Spot Healing Brush
b. In Tool Options Bar, Click Proximity Match Radial
c. Mode: Normal
d. Brush size: #10 Soft Edge (Hardness affects the texture)
e. Drag and/or click areas around crack/wrinkles
f. Observe fixes as you go.

5 / Fix large blemished areas (i.e. chipped nose) with Clone Stamp Tool

e. Opacity: 100%
f. Hover over area you wish the chipped area to match and Hold Alt (Option - Mac) + Click with Mouse
g. Brush area to be cloned
h. You may use the Blur tool to soften the edges of corrected areas. / S / S
NOTE: For future projects, if the area you wish to sample is on another layer), you may click the check box for Sample All Layers

QUICK RETOUCHING TIPS:
It’s All A Blur:
A simple Blur overlay layer, can reduce the appearance of facial flaws
/ 1. Duplicate your original portrait layer
2. Rename the Original Copy Layer “Blur”
3. Control-Click the “Blur” layer and Convert to a Smart Object
4. Go To Menu Bar> Filter> Blur> Gaussian Blur…
5. Slide to or type 8.5 for Radius, Hit OK
6. Go To Blend Modes in the Layer Panel
7. Choose Overlay for Blend Mode
(choose and view other blend modes)
NOTE: If the Blur Layer is more or less blurry than you desire, go to the Blur layer, double-click the Gaussian Blur “fx” and edit the Radius.

1. Choose the Blur Layer
NOTE:: (If Smart Object) Rasterize the Blur Layer > Go To Menu Bar > Layer > Rasterize > Smart Object
RASTERIZING LAYERS: To apply a simple image adjustment (from the Image menu), a layer must be converted from a smart object to a rasterized image. Simple image adjustments are destructive and cannot be edited after an adjustment is applied. For this reason we duplicate the Original layer for safekeeping.
I. Rasterize the Blur Layer by selecting the layer in the layers panel, then:
Control-Click > Rasterize
or Go to Menu Bar and click/hover
Layer > Rasterize > Smart Object
2. In the toolbar, ensure the foreground color is black
g. Choose Brush Tool (B)
h. In the Layer Panel, Click The Mask Icon
i. Paint the area on the canvas you want to remove
j. To fix an error, Switch foreground color to white
k. Paint the area on canvas you want to add back
Touch of Color:
Add lip color &
Change eye color
/ CHANGE LIP COLOR:
1. Create a new layer, name it “Lips”
2. Choose the Brush Tool (B)
3. Change the foreground color to Red or Pink
4. Use Overlay Blend Mode for Lips
5. Use Eraser tool to remove unwanted “makeup”
CHANGE EYE COLOR:
1. Create a new layer, name it “Eyes”
2. Same as above (may use 100% brush hardness)
3. Change foreground color to eye color of choice
4. Use Color Dodge Blend Mode
5. Same as above (may use 100% brush hardness) / B

Adjust the Levels for your image by Adding an Adjustment Layer / a. Select the Visible Image Layer
b. Click New Fill and Adjustment Layer icon (Fig. B)
c. Choose Levels…
d. In the Preset drop down menu, choose each option and view the effects on the image
e. Select Desired Preset (Fig. C)
f. Rename the Levels 1 Layer “SAME AS ADJUSTMENT SELECTED”
g. Toggle Hide/Reveal (Eyeball) to observe difference between the adjusted layer and the previous layer
