Weeks 9and 10 for English 096
Monday, November 23: We will continue to work on the cause-effect essay. HOMEWORK: Prepare a draft of your cause-effect essay to share in class.
Tuesday, November 24:Small groups will respond to drafts of the cause-effect essays. HOMEWORK: In a folderbe sure to include the final version that has a title and a Work Cited page, all drafts, student comments and a self-evaluation that states the thesis, word count, reading level, main points, your overall assessment of your essay, and any questions you want me to answer about your essay.I will deduct one point per day for late essays.
Wednesday, November 25: Cause-effect essays are due at the start of class. Then we will start to discuss the next major essay: argumentation based on 2 outside sources with no use of first person. HOMEWORK: Prepare an argumentative/persuasive topic that you want to research for the next essay. Complete assignments begun in class. Read pages 220-229. Complete Practices 1 and 2, pages 224-226. Also read the essay starting on page 670 and respond to the Guiding Question, Summarize, Reflect, Identify, Check Your Comprehension and Read Critically questions. Be prepared to research your topic in the Library.
Thursday, November 26 and Friday, November 27: Thanksgiving Holiday.
Monday, November 30, Tuesday, December 1, and Wednesday, December 2: We will meet in the Library Lab, Room T to learn how to access material for your argumentative/persuasive essay. HOMEWORK: Read the essay starting on page 674. Complete the Guiding Question, Reflect (2), Predict, Identify, Check Your Comprehension, and Read Critically questions. Work on developing your argumentative-persuasive essay.
Thursday, December 3: We are back in our classroom. Individuals can receive credit by making a 5-10 minute oral report to the class that mentions the following: 1) the debatable issue you are writing about and your position 2) the arguments you will use to support your position 3) the sources you will use in your essay 4) students can make comments, offer suggestions, or ask questions. HOMEWORK: Write 3-5 sentences (one paragraph) each responding to two of the presenters today. Make a comment, offer a suggestion or ask them a question. Complete your vocabulary journal. Read the essay starting on page 678 and respond to the Guiding Question, Summarize, Identify, Reflect, Check Your Comprehension, and Read Critically questions.
