*Some Bubble Gum Lesson Ideas
RATING and GRAPHING Different Brands
Materials:
Various Brands of Chewing/Bubble Gum
Gum Graph to match your brands
Do whole class graph on large butcher paper
Gum Rating Sheet (on global)
Science Journals
Students have a chance to taste each of the types of gum and as they do they can “rate” their observations/thoughts on the Rating Sheet using their senses.
Once all brands have been tasted and rated, students can then note their favorite on the class graph.
Students can make notes of the experiment and final data in their journals. GREAT MATH connection!
**More Bubble Gum EXPLORATION/EVALUATION
(not for the faint of heart)…
Materials:
2 pieces of Bubble Gum (your choice but Double Bubble can be found in the large tubs for cheaper price)
1 4”x4” piece of wax paper per student
Electronic Scale
Some type of timer for 2 to 5 minutes
Lab Sheet (found on CCISD global drive)
(Optional: 2 pieces of Sugar Free to run 2nd Test)
**Students unwrap and weigh both pieces together on the wax paper together before chewing. Note the weight. The actual weight numbers may be more for our G/T friends but all can note the changes up and down during the experiment even if the actual numbers don’t relate.
**Next the students put both pieces into their mouth and begin to chew. TIME them for TWO (2) minutes. At 2 mins have them take the blob of gum out and place it on their wax paper piece. Weigh their gum and have them note the weight. Give them time to remark on the results.
**Now have them place the “wad o’ gum” back into their mouths to chew for 5 minutes. Repeat the process of weighing from above.
**Allow students plenty of time to record and share their thoughts and reasoning. Discuss how the sugar and loss of sugar and then their saliva can result in the changes in weight.
This could then be re-done using Sugar Free Bubble Gum if you want.
