COURSE TITLE: Algebra II CCR Syllabus 2016-2017

Teacher: Dr. Joanna Thompson

COURSE TEXTS:

Carnegie Learning High School Math Series

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

In Algebra II, a one-credit course, students build on their work with linear, quadratic, and exponential functions, to extend their repertoire of functions to include polynomial, rational, and radical functions. Students work closely with the expressions that define the functions, and continue to expand and hone their abilities to model situations and to solve equations, including solving quadratic equations over the set of complex numbers and solving exponential equations using the properties of logarithms. The Mathematical Practice Standards apply throughout this course and, together with the content standards, prescribe that students experience mathematics as a coherent, useful, and logical subject that makes use of their ability to make sense of problem situations. The four critical areas of this course include (1) working extensively with polynomial operations; (2) building connections between geometry and trigonometric ratios; (3) understanding of a variety of function families; and (4) explore statistical data.

COURSE POLICIES:

Attendance

Regular attendance and participation are the best ways to ensure success in this course. Students are expected to arrive on time and stay for the entire class. If a student is late a pass must be presented.

Classroom Etiquette

Respect others by being polite and considerate.

Academic Integrity

Students must comply with the standards of conduct mandated as outlined in the Student Handbook. Any student caught plagiarizing or cheating on an assignment in violation of that policy will not receive credit for that assignment.

Daily Homework

Daily homework will be checked for completion. It must be done on loose-leaf paper. All work must be shown, submitted on time, and clearly and neatly written. If the stated expectations are not displayed, student will not receive credit. Any daily homework that is late will not be accepted. If a student is absent, he or she must turn in their homework in the day that they return. It is the student’s responsibility to check with me prior to the next class of missed assignments. This can be done by checking the Absent Binder for missed assignments. Assignments will not be accepted any time thereafter.

Graded Assignments

Graded assignments consist of weekly assignments, graded class work, graded homework, projects and cumulative reviews.

Tests & Quizzes

Tests and quizzes will be announced in advance. If a student is absent on the day of a test or quiz, student must make arrangements with me to make up the quizzes and/or testson the return day.

KEYS FOR SUCCESS OR CLASS PHILOSOPHY:

To be successful in Algebra II,it is imperative that you follow the “fourp’s”—be prompt, be prepared, be polite, and be productive. I expect students to enter my classroom everyday on time with their materials ready. We cover a tremendous amount of material for the year, so it is important to start our class on time.

To be prepared, everyday students must bring notebooks, paper, pencils, assignments, Algebra II tools, calculator, and most importantly their thinking cap. Being prepared includes being mentally ready for the challenges that we will face during our time together. Homework must be fully complete upon entering the classroom and placed into the correct block assignment tray. Student should also be fully prepared for any quizzes or tests. Studying is a necessary part of this course. I am always available for help with prior notice.

Next, students must be polite. During the year, students will be working with partners and in small groups and thus it is critical for students to be respectful to those around them. It is also important to be respectful to me; I treat all of my students with respect and expect that in return. In addition students must follow the school rules, which includes no plagiarism (copying homework does fall into this category!)

Lastly, students need to be productive. Since we cover a lot of material, we must use our class time wisely and work until the end of the period. Classes will begin with either a bell-ringer, homework check or a brief activity for students to begin working on upon entering the classroom.Assignments are posted prior to students entering the class. This activity must be done daily without teacher prompting.During our class time, students will learn and practice new concepts. Outside of the classroom, you will also need to be productive.Homework is a way for you to practice the material. Studying is also required outside of the classroom. To be successful you MUST practice and study the material.
