The NCAOMS Meritorious Service Award
The NCAOMS Board realized that many people have served NCAOMS in various capacities tirelessly for many years and we wanted to recognize them for their service and approved the concept in 2008. NCAOMS has given special awards in the past that would fall under this category, and the board felt it was time to establish an award to satisfy this need. The first award was given to Faith Dunham-Simms in September, 2008 for her service as Membership Chair, the e-mail sender (and non-responder except when she can’t help herself) and as a member of the Conference Planning Committee for multiple conferences. The NCAOMS Meritorious Service Award was officially approved in 2009. If you know of someone who you feel is deserving of this award, please fill out the nomination form and send it in!

PETE WURZBURGER AWARD
The Pete Wurzburger Award is in honor of a pioneer in the Orientation and Mobility field and the man who trained so many of us. The following are guidelines for the Pete Wurzburger Award:
I. Theaward shall be offered to one or more individuals who have made significant long-term contributions to the field of Orientation and Mobility, asdetermined by the chapter officers and board members, or in conjunction with the membership of the chapter at large.
II. The recipient(s) shall preferably have a minimum of ten years of experience in service to blind and visually impaired individuals. The recipient(s) shall have performed services, acts, or made successful contributions that provide benefit to Orientation and Mobility Specialists or the individuals that O&M Specialists work with.
III. The recipient(s) shall preferably be an Orientation and Mobility Specialist, or former O&M Specialist, having obtained a certified or certifiable level of competence in our profession.
IV. The award will be presented annually, provided an appropriate recipient has been nominated, at a time to be determined by the President in conjunction with the President elect, Secretary, Treasurer and board members.
V. Until further guidelines are established, theaward recipient(s) may be chosen by the President, President elect, Secretary, Treasurer and board members when all of these individuals unanimously elect said recipient(s).
VI. Each award recipient(s) will receive a plaque appropriately engraved together with a letter of appreciation from the chapter president.
VII. The award will be presented at the State Conference, or at one of the local chapter meetings, as determined by the officers and board members, with the call for nominations going out in the Spring newsletter.
The Pete Wurzburger Awards Committee revised the guidelines in 1997 and introduced the Distinguished PRACTIONER Award for those who provide DIRECT service. Typically, though, the award was more of a Distinguished SERVICE Award "for those who have had a more global effect on the field of Orientation and Mobility." Note "that the Award may NOT be necessarily presented at every possibility." Also, members of the Awards Committee may NOT nominate. Should a committee member be nominated, he or she must resign from the committee for that year. A letter of recommendation is required; the number of letters received shall not determine the recipient. The recipient must be a resident of northern California (Bakersfield and north).
